The third annual Wings for Life World Run, held on 8th May was a record breaking event in many ways. To start with, the previous record for maximum distance covered was broken in both the men’s and women’s categories. Italy’s Giorgio Calcaterra managed to stay ahead of the Catcher Car finish line for an incredible 88.44 km, to make him the first runner to pass the 80km mark. For the past two years, 60km had been the goal of the top women runners and this year, Japan’s Kaori Yoshida not only reached that goal, she smashed the record, going on to run 65.71 km. The records continue when one moves on from distance and looks at the number of competitors. Starting from 34 official locations a massive 130,732 people took part, while the Selfie Runners numbered 20,556. Last but by no means least comes perhaps the most important record of all, as an amazing 6.6 million Euros was raised through everyone’s effort and generosity, which will be put to good use in the cause of spinal chord injury research.
