Mercedes could ban Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg from wheel-to-wheel racing for the rest of the season, after their crash in Austria.

But Toto Wolff needs to understand that doing that would have serious ramifications – for the team, and the sport as a whole.

Mercedes are the dominant team in F1. Ferrari and Red Bull challenge at certain tracks, but Mercedes are the constant. If they step away from competitive race then what do we have?

F1 needs Rosberg and Hamilton to fight. TV audiences are dwindling, and F1 needs a reason for them to stay watching.

The history, the contrast and the mutual dislike has made Hamilton and Rosberg the modern day version of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. They don’t like each other and are not afraid to show it.

Hamilton is the more skilled of the two drivers – of that there is no doubt, but Rosberg’s intense desire and impressive speed make him a match at all times.

Mercedes need to keep this pair fighting – otherwise audiences will turn off.

They will win both titles, and they owe it to the sport to make it more entertaining.

They need to take a gamble, and everyone loves a flutter – especially when the odds are stacked in your favour, such as at Mercedes.

What is the worse than can happen? They collide again? Great! It adds to the drama.

There is no way Mercedes can lose – just like F1 fans who play poker on online pokies.

Wolff has a duty to the sport to ensure it remains entertaining and free of team orders. If it doesn’t then what do we have left?
