Jenson Button has described his qualifying lap ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix as one of the best he has ever done, after putting his McLaren ninth on the grid.

The 2009 world champion finished ahead of team-mate Fernando Alonso for the fifth time this season as he split Williams pair Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa.

McLaren have struggled again this season and rarely ventured into the top 10, which is why Button hailed his lap and later said it was as good as he could have hoped for at a power-hungry Spa circuit.

“That was as good as it was going to get. I always love Spa, hopefully tomorrow we can have a decent race,” he said.

"We would all rather have pace than reliability, we did not expect to come here and be in P9.

"It's good progress so we're happy. In Q2 that was one of the best laps that I've done."
