Sebastian Vettel's future at Ferrari is suddenly in doubt.

That is the claim of Luigi Perna, a respected correspondent for the respected Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Perna said that with Vettel's title hopes in tatters despite having a match for Mercedes' car this year, the German is losing support and increasingly "isolated" at Maranello.

He suggested that if Vettel also fails to win in 2019 with the best car, termination clauses in his contract could lead to his exit before the 2020 season.

Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene said at the Festival dello Sport event earlier this week: "I am sure that sooner or later he will bring the title back here."

I doubt he'll leave after the 2019 season. He's had two bad years but Vettel is still a top class driver. Everyone likes Kimmi but the truth is he's not consistently good enough to be in a Ferrari seat and hasn't been for a few years. I actually think Sebastian has had a major part to play in Kimmi staying as long as he has done at Ferrari and in part at least this is a reason why Seb has had a loss of form. He knows he can beat Kimmi eight times out of ten in qualifying and almost every time in the race itself so he's not been pushed since joining Ferrari four years ago.

On the other hand Hamilton had Rosberg to contend with and although he isn't generally someone who gets heaped with praise I think he was a very fast and very rounded driver. In the same underestimated way Bottas is pretty quick in quali and often gives Lewis pause for thought but I accept that Bottas hasn't shown the same ruthless streak that Rosberg has in the races themselves.

So what I'm saying in a roundabout way is that Leclerc going to Ferrari may just be what Vettel (but particularly Ferrari) needs. They need two drivers that push each other to find that extra tenth or two that a Verstappen or a Hamilton seem to find I their cars.

I'm sure that was supposed to read Vettle switch but, there will never be a place for Vettle at Mercedes. Ocon and other hotshoes will make him redundant. This is a big reason for his mind set I think. Inside he knows that, as Jackie Stewart said 'Sebastian is past his best, Lewis has not yet reached his peak'. Game over
