Eddie Irvine is one of the most iconic Formula One drivers. Born on November 10, 1965, in Northern Ireland, he began his racing career at the age of 17 in the Irish Formula Ford Championship. He then went on to race in the British Formula Three Championship, where he won the title in 1987.
In 1993, Irvine made his debut in Formula One with the Jordan team. His first race was at the Japanese Grand Prix, where he finished 6th. The following year, he moved to the Lotus team and had a solid season, finishing 10th in the championship.
However, it was in 1996 when Irvine made his mark on the sport. He signed with the Ferrari team as a test driver but was promoted to a race seat midway through the season after Gerhard Berger was forced to retire due to illness. Irvine proved to be a valuable asset to the team and helped Ferrari win their first Constructors' Championship in 16 years in 1999.
Irvine's finest season came in 1999 when he finished second in the championship, just two points behind his teammate, Mika Hakkinen. He won four races that season, including a memorable victory in the Australian Grand Prix, where he overtook Hakkinen on the last lap to secure the win.
After his successful stint with Ferrari, Irvine moved to Jaguar Racing in 2000, where he spent three seasons. He retired from Formula One in 2002 with a total of four wins, 26 podiums, and 191 points to his name.
Irvine's personality off the track was just as colorful as his driving style. He was known for his outspoken and sometimes controversial comments, which made him a fan favorite. In retirement, he has continued to be involved in motorsport, running his own team in the American Le Mans Series.
Eddie Irvine's career was defined by his speed, skill, and determination, and he remains one of the most popular drivers in Formula One history. His contribution to Ferrari's success in the late 1990s and his fearless driving style will be remembered for many years to come.
