The first free practice for the upcoming 2019 Spanish GP was driven under perfect ambient circumstance.
In the first part of the session all teams tried out their new version of their 2019 car. As usual all teams brought a lot of upgrades to Catalaunya. Ferrari have brought new aero parts and a new spec engine for the race this weekend. The Renault powered cars will use a new spec power unit on Saterday.
Both Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc were again much quicker than the rest of the grid. Vettel even drove lap times that were over 1.3 seconds faster. Halfway the session the teams all head back to the pits to hand back a set of tyres to Pirelli as per the regulations. The track falled silent because of that. Vettel still was the leaded the time sheet in front of his team mate, with Ricciardo over a second back in P3.
Not much happened during this FP1 session in Spain. Max Verstappen in the Red Bull had a close moment with Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) near the chicane and Romain Grosjean went of the track in turn 12.
With 1/3 to go and despite a less than ideal preparation lap, the Finn Valtteri Bottas went quickest a 1m 17.990s.
Three teams have focused solely on the soft tyre so far today - Ferrari, Alfa and Renault. Renault in particular have struggled for one lap pace this season, and last time out had the double whammy of no race pace either. Have they learned enough so far today to make an impact in qualifying?
Surprisingly Verstappen and Bottas both had an oil leakage on their engine at the same time and had to be fixed. Best of the rest was Romain Grosjean in the "new" Haas. In the last minutes of the session Lance Stroll hit the grass entry at turn 9 and crashed into the barrier with the front of th RP19. Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley did the same thing during testing and last years grand prix weekend.
The quickest lap time of last years FP1 was 1:18.148 min also by Bottas.
