Dr Helmut Marko thinks Sebastian Vettel needs to "change the team" he drives for in order to get his Formula 1 career back on track. The German, who is nominally Ferrari's number 1 driver, has lost the crucial backing of the Italian media after Silverstone following yet another fundamental mistake.

"At Red Bull, he hardly made any mistakes," noted the energy drink outfit's new star Max Verstappen. "You do not forget how to drive. "So why does this stuff keep happening to him over and over again at Ferrari?"

Marko, the Red Bull driver manager who brought the German into F1 and hosted his four world championships, thinks it is a crisis of confidence for Vettel. "You make mistakes when you are no longer sure of yourself," he told Auto Bild. "It happens in the subconscious."

Vettel has a contract for 2020, but that has not stopped speculation that he might either quit F1 or even return to Red Bull. Red Bull team manager Jonathan Wheatley said: "Sebastian is a very intelligent, sensitive and warm-hearted man.

"You can tell by how loving he is to his wife and his children. Or the fantastic speech he delivered in honour of Charlie Whiting at Silverstone. "He's not such a tough guy like Michael Schumacher or Fernando Alonso, who were always able to perform. Sebastian is a driver who has to feel unconditional support.

"He had that with Red Bull. And he probably doesn't have it at Ferrari," Wheatley added. Marko agrees that leaving Ferrari might be the only thing that can put Vettel back on track. "Sebastian would have to be in a different environment. In order words, change the team," he said. "But I see no way for 2020."

So much for the temperamental, warm hearted, but loving Italians.

Italian media have been hurling criticism at Vettel for a while now. That's how they make their money: sensationalize!

But they are not the ones who started dumping on Vettel. It was Arrivabene who started criticising Vettel publically. He is the one who started saying things about Vettel that should have been said strictly between the two men in the garage.

Joe Frazier, when he was fighting Muhammad Ali, was very candid: there is no two way about it - it's pure hatred (between the two men.) If hatred is the name of the game, when it comes to Vettel, posters on this board are certainly no slouches.

Vettel will not go back to Redbull because Verstappen is there number one, so he will not be number two driver. I do believe Vettel as lost is zing, and will get it back. as previous f1 drivers as said no to getting back in a f1 car. Vettel should retire before he ends up in a team that cannot give him a car that makes him world champion. now he knows how Mark Webber felt.

Even if the case could be made for your theory being plausible, there is one much bigger reason for Vettel not returning to RB.

Seeing the warm and fuzzy treatment that Kvyat, Hartley, and Gasly have received in the hands of Marko and Horner I fail to see why Vettel would rush to go back.

  4. OK then

He only jumped from the RB ship because a better 'Nr2' driver came along, now they have an even better driver a return will be even less likely (maybe if Max leaves and Stroll joins).
    Article is click bait, doh!

I can see how Vettel is having tough time.

He has an unenviable task of driving a good, not the best, car on the grid, and has no idea of who's doing his thinking for him.

You guys should, at least, be charitable and tell him who he is. Since you've all figured it out let the man in on. Don't let the man be the last to find out what you've decided for him.

No other team would take on SB as they would fear his mistakes didn’t end with leaving Ferrari. Added to that the former 4-time champ expecting No 1 status and a car to suit his driving style. He’s done well when the team has revolved around him. I don’t see that going forward. Plus it seems LH can destroy his competitors, in mind and on track.

How about Vettel joins Mercedes next year as I think it would be great to see Hamilton and Vettel in the same team and then we can watch them race with the same tools and see how they compare? I think that Totto is fond of Seb and he has respect for him so he might just give Seb a chance to show himself in Mercedes regardless of Hamilton's status in the team. Ferrari is not likely to truly challenge the Mercs. for the next 2 years so no matter how much Vettel tries to get a title with Ferraris he will not be able to do it with the car he has been driving this season and neither will Leclerc. So Vettel needs to make a decision to leave Ferrari for his own good and move elsewhere , possibly to a lesser team where he can use his experience and skills and not be under such a pressure . Or he can just leave F1 without any regrets and not look back , there is far more to life than chasing other cars on the tracks. I shall be pleased to see him racing for a bit longer but if he decides otherwise I shall be happy for him and hope he does something else close to his heart and gives him lot of satisfaction.

Unfortunately, the Ferrari setup is typical of the Italians. Too much is put on winning. It's far too corporate. If you aren't you get the abuse that nobody deserves. With Red Bull, the set-up is more like a family, everybody pulls together and helps the team as a whole. Such is the difference between Ferrari and Red Bull that they're at the opposite ends of the spectrum. Why has Ferrari got such a fantastic following? Their road cars are so noisy and as a mechanic said to me "they are all pop rivets and plastic" Sebastian needs support and he won't get it at Ferrari.

      Very good reasoning.

Driving for such a team the expectations (by the public) would be lowered significantly, the spotlight taken off, and the undue pressure removed.

Kimmi is the driver to emulate in that regard, not that Vettel needs a role model.

Hmmm Helmut is the king of mind games, but now his range is extended beyond the circle of harried RB drivers. I guess there's more than one way to skin a Ferrari! When will he start working on Bottas and Merc?
