F1 wants US driver, bigger team + 2nd GP
F1 still has a keen eye on America.
On Thursday, the sport officially confirmed that Mexico is staying on the calendar until at least 2022. The news means that a jam-packed 22-race calendar for 2020 is now basically set. F1 business journalist Christian Sylt quoted F1 CEO Chase Carey as saying it will be released "in the next few weeks".
The extra race next year is not universally popular among the teams and fans, but it is expected that the calendar in 2021 and beyond could be even busier.
"We expect the number of races over the next few years to increase a bit," Carey is quoted by Forbes. At the top of F1's wish-list is a second race in the United States, with Carey eyeing "destination cities like Las Vegas and Miami".
"I have meetings next week with parties there," he revealed. "I had meetings a month ago there. Down the road you would love to have a US driver. That probably takes longer."
Carey also wants an American F1 team with a bigger profile than Haas. "We have Haas as a US team. We would love to add to that with a high-profile US team," he said.
But from a sporting perspective, Carey says he is happy with the "spectacular" show put on by F1 before the August break.
"We're excited about the growing competitiveness of Red Bull and Ferrari, plus Honda's return as a winning engine supplier," he said.

F1 admin might want them, no one else does.
I agree, The Americas have four if Mexico, Montreal and Brazil are included. It is only the "owners" that want this because of their nationality. If there does need to be more races keep some of the ones that have been there forever eg Germany. Why not return to South Africa?
The don't want more races in America and the Americas for nationalistic reasons--they want more races in the Western Hemisphere as events during afternoon hours in the US, so they get higher ratings. A US Grand Prix at 2:00pm in the afternoon US time is on in Europe at 8pm on Sunday night, UK prime time, with a perfect 2 hour sports spectacle like a Grand Prix.
It's a Win-Win-Win to add more races in the US and the Americas!
Bring back Watkins Glen!!!! It’s the only true road course in the USA!!!!
Watkins Glen is plenty good. But, Circuit of the Americas is a true road course as well - and it's awesome also. The Glen's only problem is it isn't safe for modern cars. Otherwise, they are both great US tracks. Let's say Watkins is America's historic great track and COTA is America's modern great. Ok?
Can this mid season break and fill up the roster with more meets. How many sporting seasons have a mid term break for goodness sake. More races and another two PU’s to cover the extra laps and use the extra pilot on each team; get after it boys!!
The summer break is needed for the teams as the season grows longer with more races. What other race travels the worlds 5 continents every season?
I think it’s pretty obvious that they can continue without the break, I’m sure the support teams aren’t overwhelmed and exhausted after all it’s just a job and there are breaks between most meets. So they fly around and stay in hotels etc, that’s part of their enjoyment of their ‘sport’. Nahh, do away with this silly break.
Liberty Media wants more races in the U.S., but doesn't do anything to attract U.S. viewers. They simply present F1 as a non-U.S. sport by cutting out NBC and having it presented by Sky Sports. They haven't showed any knowledge or understanding of F1.
It's only about shareholders now not many "sports" left in this world just business ........
