Roger Penske says he would like to see the fabled Indianapolis Motor Speedway return to the F1 calendar.

Formula 1 is already working on a plan to add Miami to the schedule, to make it the second American race alongside Austin.

But the Miami plans are facing political hurdles fuelled by opponents.

So it is interesting that American racing legend Penske, who bought the Indy 500 venue as well as the Indycar series late last year, has now thrown Indianapolis' name into the hat.

"More nuggets from Penske," Jenna Fryer, a respected American racing journalist for the Associated Press, said on Twitter.

"He wants F1 and sports cars back at the speedway. Has had no talks with either series," she added.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted Formula 1 on a circuit that combined a part of the famous oval with an infield section between 2000 and 2007.

Unfortunately, 2006 does stick in our minds. However, Indy would be a much better venue than a parking lot in Miami. I'm just not sure that even the ever cordial Roger will tolerate Liberty.

Alexander, your posts are generally spot on but not this time. IMS has a 14 corner road course within the facility and first rate race accommodations. Not the best circuit in the world, but certainly on a par with most F1 tracks.

You got me, Alexander. Ouch. I am not a roundy-round fan, but that "left hand jerk off circuit" has been running a 500 mile race continuously since 1911 and is considered, with LeMans and Monaco, part of the trifecta for racing drivers. The airport circuit in England doesn't make the grade.

Having attended every USGP at IMS, including the one where Michelin got it spectacularly wrong, I can say YEAH! Indy is built (hotel-wise) to handle 250,000+ fans for the 500 mile race and the NASCAR wknd, so the 150,000 or so for F1 was never a challenge for the city's infrastructure. Sat high in Stand H, great view of turns 1 and 2 and turn 6 (the 180 degree left-hander that the current IndyCar GP circuit, much to my dismay, omits). Would happily go back!

The new revised 14 turn course would be very good for F1 it's still fast with the new turns between Indy car 1 and 2 .gone is the infield paperclip section.
