Oct.1 - Michael Schumacher remains "one step ahead" of Lewis Hamilton in terms of F1 greatness.

That is the view of Fernando Alonso, as the world of Formula 1 contemplates Hamilton racing past Schumacher's all-time victory record and equalling his seven titles in 2020.

"I remember Michael as a driver with the greatest talent," the Spaniard, who raced for titles against both drivers, told Germany's Sport Bild.

As for Hamilton, Alonso said the Mercedes driver is clearly "very good and the best of his generation".

"But he did not win the world championship at McLaren when his teammate was Jenson Button. Nico Rosberg also won the world championship at Mercedes," he said.

"Michael never had such things - he always won. For me, Michael is one step ahead," Alonso added.

The 39-year-old was also asked about Ferrari's 2020 slump, comparing Sebastian Vettel's failure to win a title for Maranello with his own.

"If you sign with Ferrari, you assume that you can win the world championship," said the two-time champion.

"After four titles, Vettel probably thought he could get another, but sometimes you don't get lucky with the right moment and opportunities.

"I think we both missed having the right car at the right time, but in my career, I tried not to concentrate only on Formula 1, for example by doing Le Mans and trying to win as much as I could."

Alonso thinks Racing Point-Aston Martin is a good move for quadruple world champion Vettel for 2021.

"At the moment it looks like Aston Martin will have better chances of being competitive next year than Ferrari, even if it's hard to believe," he said.

Alonso raced against both and has first hand experience with which to judge, I think we should respect his opinion, which is aligned with mine. Even if others don't respect my opinion. David

One thing Lewis Hamilton has never had is a contract that dictates that the second driver had to give way to him all the time, as per Eddie Irvine, Rubens Barrichello etc as Schumacher had. To my mind Schumacher was a "flawed" Champion as per his attempt to run both Damon Hill and Villeneuve off the road in his endeavor to win at all costs. Alonso also thought he had a similar deal when he came across Lewis too at a later date at McLaren and possibly when Massa was his team mate. Lewis is a gentleman compared to Schumacher and I have no doubt he will eclipse his record very soon....The only thing left for Schumacher will be the number of fastest laps....Great but flawed is my opinion.. .

Further to my post, it seems that both Alonso and Sir Jackie ... are both trying to destableise Lewis this season. However most of what they are saying is, I believe, sour grapes. F1 is certainly safer than it was but certainly not easier to win a Grand Prix. Drivers are fitter than they were in the "Gin & Tonic and 10 cigs" before a GP as training. Alonso has had his time and we will see next . season if the good times roll again or he disappears into the archives. I have followed F1 Since the early 60's and it seems to me that the FIA are changing the rules to artificialy spice up the racing, if as believed Red Bull whinged to the FIA to remove the "Party" botton from Mercedes engine as Honda could not duplicate it to the same degree..Or am I wrong. ???

Further to the Sir Jackie negativity re Lewis...Lewis bit back but in a nicer way than I would have expected. Then continued with the utmost respect. Why can't older retired racers give Lewis the same respect that he gives them. Another point is that "so called" F1 fans are saying Lewis is only winning because he is driving the best car, Can't remember them saying this when Vettel won 4 titles, Schumacher when he won 5 titles and Hakkinen when he won 2 etc.....Why are they so negative when it comes to Lewis Hamilton's achievements. Strength to your arm, Lewis, may the wins keep coming.
