Massa says Russell 'deserves a chance' at Mercedes team
Apr.27 - George Russell is a "super driver" who "deserves a chance" to race for the works Mercedes team.
That is the view of former Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, who gave an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport on the occasion of his 40th birthday.
When asked about Valtteri Bottas, who is struggling to match up to Lewis Hamilton this year, Massa said he thinks the Finn's "performance is connected to the spiritual side".
"It is not easy when comparing yourself to a champion like Lewis Hamilton," the Brazilian said.
On pole position to succeed Bottas is 23-year-old George Russell, who had a high-profile crash and confrontation with the current Mercedes driver at Imola.
"George is a super driver, even though he made a mistake in Imola," said Massa. "I appreciate the fact that he apologised after calming down. It was a sign of him growing up.
"He deserves a chance, and I hope Mercedes gives him that chance at some point," said Massa.

I don't think GR believed he had to apologise. It didn't come across as heartfelt to me, more that it was aimed at soothing Toto & his comment that GR's future was looking more like being in the "Clio cup series" at opposed to being in the Merc seat. I realise I don't know GR at all, so I'm just saying how the 'apology' came across to me
Spot on, Linda.....a pure fluff spot written by a PR person. But, neither driver owed an apology. It was a simple racing wreck.
Why apologize? It was a racing incident... Valterri moved to the right on a very slick track with just a nartow 'lane'. He saw a faster coming making an obvious move on him and should have let him by in tbese conditions. Toto was only upset because Russel's aggressive driving (good) crashed two cars with Merc engines. If RUS had done this with VER, Toto would be whining about Red Bull...
