May 11 - Toto Wolff wants Lewis Hamilton to sign more than another one-year contract.

Last weekend in Barcelona, 2021 world championship leader Hamilton indicated that he doesn't want his forthcoming contract talks with Mercedes boss Wolff to drag on as long as they did last year and winter.

And now Wolff admits that he wants the annual negotiations to stop altogether.

"Yes, it should be," said the Austrian, when asked if 36-year-old Hamilton's next deal should be for more than a single year.

"We don't want to be in a stressful situation every single year where we are absolutely flat-out trying to win races and needing to negotiate.

"I would rather that doesn't happen every year," added Wolff. "We just need to spend a day or two together, put it out there, and decide which are the difficult components. We will then lock the door and won't walk out until it is sorted.

"That works best for us and it has worked best for us in the past."

Although Hamilton is now 36 and on the cusp of an unprecedented eighth drivers' title, Wolff thinks the British driver is able to keep racing for now.

"As long as Lewis continues to look after himself mentally and physically, continues to develop cognitively, then he can go on for much longer," he said.

Arguably the bigger question for Wolff is whether to keep Valtteri Bottas or finally replace him with George Russell. The latest speculation comes as Wolff flags talks with Bottas over the Finn's reluctance to accept team orders in Spain.

"When should a winning team be disbanded, and why?" wondered Ossi Oikarinen, a commentator for the Finnish broadcaster C More.

"If another driver is brought in, will he get along with Hamilton and can he perform better for the team? They are big questions for the team."

Great comments (well excepting JAX lol) Third time posted. IMO, 2022 and beyond at MB will be HAM/BOT or BOT/RUS. The next couple of years are likely to be a challenge for all of the teams. Stability will be an advantage.

understand what your saying about stability and a challenge , i just wonder how that argument plays out when you include how well GR drove the Merc as a one off last year, i mean it wasnt a fluke was it, he basically showed F1 that any half decent driver can drive that car very very fast, and from that, would LH want a
young gun rocking the boat possibly.if imo LH thinks ahead as we are repeatedly told he does hell go out at end of the year on top, Toto will divorce Suzi and him and Lewis will skip off into the sunset together No.... , im sorry i was just in Jaxworld there for a brief moment I do apologize.

Not knocking RUS. He has done well in a slow car and did the job in the MB one-off. Point is that he will not be paired with HAM for the reasons you mentioned. Oh, and the constant BOT bashing is a bit overdone, that's two points.

As for Jaxworld, it only exists on a planet far, far away. LOL

Today in Jax World News, Sir Lewis Hamilton will sign a new 3 year contract with Merc, which will have a likely final year opt out clause(in case he's no longer happy with the team so added incentive to keep him that way) and also increased salary which will make him the highest earning Racer in history. Afterwhich he'll retire before the age of 40. In return Merc will make record earnings from having the most decorated driver with 8 titles after the end of this season.
