Jul.18 - Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was the winner of the 72nd British Grand Prix today with two tyre changes. He now only is one victory shy of 100 GP wins.

It was quite a dramatic British Grand Prix that was paused by a red flag shortly after the start following contact between Hamilton and Red Bull driver and 2021 F1 championship leader Max Verstappen.

Hamilton started on medium (C2) tyres, changed to another set of mediums during the red flag period after lap two and did a pitstop in lap 27 and then finished the race on the hard (C1) tyres.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who finished second, led the complete race until the final laps before being overhauled at Copse corner by Hamilton. The British driver was fighting back from his 10-second penalty because the stewards decided, he caused the collision on the first lap which ended Verstappen's race.

The same basic strategy was used by all the drivers apart from AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly (who made an extra stop following a puncture) and Red Bull's Sergio Perez.

Under the red flag rules, teams are allowed to change tyres and repair damage. In total, 13 drivers changed tyres (including Hamilton): but they just swapped the mediums they had originally started the race on for a fresh set of the same compound.

The sprint qualifying format for the British Grand Prix meant that drivers had a free choice of tyres for the start. They all chose to start on the medium C2 tyre, with Perez – who started from the pit lane – being the only car to start on the hard C1.

Temperatures remain high throughout the race, with 32 degrees centigrade ambient and 49 degrees on track. Despite these challenging conditions, the tyres performed well.

Hamilton wins 2021 British F1 GP at Copse corner

How each tyre behaved during the weekend

HARD C1: This compound was consistent throughout even the longest runs, making it a crucial element of the strategy for the second stint after the re-start. A number of drivers completed up to 33 laps on this tyre.

MEDIUM C2: All the drivers started on this (apart from Perez). Both Hamilton and Leclerc used it for more than 25 laps. Even though this is a softer compound, making it more susceptible to blistering, this did not affect the performance in any way.

SOFT C3: Too aggressive for long runs in today's hot conditions, but used by Perez and Gasly for their final stints. Perez set fastest lap with it, but as he finished outside the top 10 does not score an extra championship point.

Mario Isola - Head of F1 and car racing
"The race strategy was influenced by the new tyre rules in place for sprint qualifying races, which allow all the drivers a free choice of tyres at the start so that they can follow the theoretically fastest run plans. That's exactly what they did today, with the vast majority moving from the medium to hard.

We were then treated to a fantastic duel between two of the top drivers in the sport, who managed their tyres perfectly to deliver a thrilling battle to the end. Now we remain at Silverstone to focus on our next task: continuing the 2022 18-inch test programme, which we will be doing on Tuesday and Wednesday with Aston Martin, Haas and Red Bull."

I think officials need to look at the view we were shown on TV. As it showed Lewis backing off and Max cutting across in front of him. Max is a brat and throws his toys out his pram if anyone gets the better of him. Best man won. Come on Lewis

Stop crying... Hamilton didn't even made it to the apex of the corner! At the end of the day he won and gained 24 points on Verstappen! What is the problem?

Hamilton was desperate to get in front, it was dangerous . Max could have been killed or seriously injured.
Wait till he gets to Zaandvoort the Dutch fans will let him know what they think of him. He doesn't deserve to win another title . Karma has a way of evening up.

About backing off (Susan Coombes), that's not even what Lewis said. He said that he saw an opening and went for it! Then he also said that he was ahead of Max!!

It's starting to look as if Lewis is in a world of his own and that he does not mind contradicting videos.

Again the system gave him a free pass...

Oh yes, I know, now you'll tell me that Lewis is a squeaky clean racer... He is when he's miles ahead, but someone is ahead of him things are different. Just ask Albon.

Max you need to learn to keep to one line, weaved everywhere on lap 1 and got caught by the better driver who did exactly the same to Leclerc on the same corner. As to all the max babies on this site, learn and move on

Off the BBC F1 Page this morning (apologies if you've already seen it )

Lewis Hamilton has been the target of racist abuse on social media after his victory at Sunday's British Grand Prix.

Hamilton received a 10-second penalty after a collision with title rival Max Verstappen during the first lap of the race, which led to the Dutchman crashing out.

Mercedes, F1 and governing body the FIA condemned the abuse "in the strongest possible terms".

"These people have no place in our sport," read a joint statement.

"We urge that those responsible should be held accountable for their actions.

"Formula One, the FIA, the drivers and the teams are working to build a more diverse and inclusive sport, and such unacceptable instances of online abuse must be highlighted and eliminated

MAD MAX, SO named for his driving style from day one, Max has/ will make moves that are thrilling heart stopping and a joy to watch, and in the prosses get it wrong. This time it was Lewis, just racing at the top level a pity they didn't both prosper from this skirmish Had the roles been reversed IMHO Max would have tried the same move. Best of luck to both of them for the rest of the season.

Lewis the Great is getting racial abuse on social media? Oh no, say it ain't so. I'm shocked, perplexed, flabbergasted, downright dumbfounded. I can't believe it Lol. Yeah you get the point.
Stop copy and pasting this nonsense as it's not surprising. His "Still I Rise" tattoo was his answer to this BS. Which basically means "bring it on, because I feed off your negativity and grow stronger to win title after title after title". So please, by all means, keep it up hater muppets.

Lewis has been known through his career as a fair racer. For goodness sake Red Bull. Move on. This IS the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP they are fighting for. The last few races have been on the cusp that there will be tears at some point. Good luck Max in your recovery. That crash was not how Lewis would have wished it had ended.
Take a breath everyone and move on.

So the ironic thing is , from his fan base hes just inspiring the next generation of middle class white kids like norris and george,as DC was with NM , sod all to do with his struggle as a black kid/man in a white majority ran sport,I, like LH wont apologise for my reasoning , its not racist , and if you believe it is you'll have about as much success with that as RB challenging the penalty.

Is lewis helping imo not, his fan base is more Tom Cruise or snoop doggy poobag or whatever his name is than the black kids of Britain

Still we rise , have a quick look on google , amazing number of white people with that tattoo, more fashion than meaning for them, now if it was full of black people ok , id might say well done Lewis you've inspired them but its not

Some people like sticking up for Lewis , but mention nothing about his commission into equality and diversity and just prefer to cast him as the black martyr fighting against oppression in a white man's world as THEY see it, guess some peoples lives didn't work out quite the way they'd planned

Controversial post, not at all i believe well thought out and honest.but you cant please everyone .
