May 11 - Lewis Hamilton's problems in 2022 extend further than just an uncompetitive car.

According to Mathias Lauda, the son of F1 legend Niki, the fact that the seven time world champion is so "grumpy" this year is also because of George Russell.

"He's really having a difficult time driving around in the midfield," he told Servus TV.

"It's still early days, but Lewis has only had problems so far. For George Russell, on the other hand, everything is new for him in a factory team.

"Lewis lost the title on the last lap of the last race in 2021 and the motivation I guess is different now. And Russell seems fully motivated and is doing a good job."

Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher agrees that the arrival of Russell, 24, has unsettled Hamilton.

"Hamilton is finding out that Russell is of a very different calibre to Bottas," he told formel1.de.

Schumacher says Russell is also very effectively rallying the Mercedes team around him.

"Russell always encourages the people in the team, just like Hamilton. He is fishing in the same pond as his teammate now," said the German.

"We can see that Russell is just handling the situation better now and I'm sure that annoys Lewis. Lewis is obviously selfish, but we all are as drivers. I used to be too," Schumacher added.

"But Lewis is having a really hard time in the car and complaining a lot. He does that too when things are going well, but this time he has a hard time as well."

Lauda, meanwhile, says Hamilton is getting preoccupied with his fight with the FIA about wearing jewellery in the cockpit - as Mohammed Ben Sulayem reportedly vows to penalise the Briton from Monaco onwards.

"Why doesn't he just put the jewellery back on right after the race?" the Austrian wondered. "The FIA sets the rules and they have to be the same across a thousand racing series."

The transition of drivers into and out of auto and motorcycle racing teams is a well oiled process. Usually, it is the driver that knows he/she has crossed the invisible line. When that fails, I suspect there is contractual language available to protect the team - and other drivers - when the over-ripe driver refuses to acknowledge what the rest of the sport already knows.

Such is the case now with Dame Lucille. His special brand of woke, SJW worldly-angst moon-turtle narcissism is now on public display. No amount of media protection by Brundle or his ilk can dim the lights shining oh so brightly on the Dame.

I sincerely hope that Lucille will graciously retire / be replaced by Mercedes sooner rather than later. The blast-radius of his present condition is growing ever wider, and it needs to be effectively managed before someone gets maimed or killed.

He's just struggling with the porpoising. No need to retire yet. Just take off the jewelry and put his head down and tough it out until the car gets better...

Brundle needs to take a break from schmoozing Hamilton every minute of the race. It has become tedious and predictable. He is being paid to comment on the race with his insights not for being Hamilton’s private cheerleader.

Hammy’s guests needs to stay off the grid and everybody else’s for that matter. Stay in the pit. Brundle, CAN the interviews with these people, their insights are not needed. Hire Will Buxton. He was the most well informed non driver to give interviews. He didn’t bother with these so called celebs, he talked to drivers and informed race people. More information less schmoozing.

These two gentlemen made some good points. LH is not used to competition, not used to a co-driver that isn’t interested in being his wingman. Russell, I’m sure is like a breath of fresh air in the pits. He’s young, enthusiastic, happy to be there, willing to listen. Hamilton now is not in a good place. Still angry and hurt by his loss. He even says publicly is mental state is not good. I’m sure having to drive a car that doesn’t help him win races, is unbearable for him. He is grumpy, dissatisfied, downright cranky. Even the FIA is making him unhappy, with his fight to the death issue over jewelry. Oh the humanity! How much more can one person take. Not even the 40,000,000 will give him comfort. Won’t even bring up Masi’s return

I’m LH fan, I like his approach to racing and overall life etc. But indeed this year he is different he feels broken, last year’s last lap deffo took a massive toll on him despite him saying that he moved on. Jewellery feud is just silly and as a high figure he should set example. It feels this year might be his last, he will definitely enjoy his creative hobbies after retirement and will possibly gain spark back in him outside F1 life. It’s good to see Russell getting spotlight, he has bright future ahead.

Lewis is a broken man, mentally. Life for him is all about recognition and accolades. He loss last year undermined his ability to go forward. His behavior was an embarrassment to himself and his team, not showing up to the awards dinner, cutting himself off from social media, not showing any integrity or grace. His time in f1 is over. His battle with the FIA over his ugly jewelry just proves how lost he is. Bye bye, Lewis, leave before you totally humilate yourself and have people forget that you were ever a 7 time world champion.

He is distracted by jewelry and bitching about everything. He lost any cool and composure as was seen last year when Max beat him. Shut up and drive. No excuses.

Yes and don't forget sir Lulu had achieved this air of confidence through winning 7 championships where drivers felt that they dare not attack him or they moved out of his way when approaching and Lewis say "Hey guys tell this guy to move I'm the world champion let me through" the only one who would stand up to him was Alonso also A WDC now things have changed the car has changed he has to fight for 6th place drivers aren't afraid to fight him any more he is no longer the big man.

Why do people comment on his wealth? No is one criticizing his wealth or how he spends his money, it is his attitude and behavior. Money doesn’t not buy taste, does not improve attitude or behavior or character. That is his problem not his financial portfolio. The message that is being expressed here, as long as you are Uber wealthy and black, you don’t have to follow the rules.
I thought when he admitted to some mental stress after Abu Dhabi, we just wanted sympathy. I think he really has some mental and emotional problems that need to be addressed and maybe driving a car is not a good idea.

Wow! A truly great driver like Lewis somehow has a car that doesn't quite suit him at the moment and all the haters crawl out from under their rocks! If the man were not black, I doubt most of these boo-birds would open their beaks. LH did not lose to Willie Wooden Shoes. He lost to Michael Masi as evidenced by Masi's current job and the fact nobody hears from MM anymore. In the end, none of it matters. When WWS hits 7 (count 'em) World Championships, I might consider elevating him to the status of Lewis Hamilton. Until the next Championship, he's just another one hit wonder!

I noticed that people throw out the word racism to end all discussions. Mr. Veltheim, you don’t know me, you have no idea who I am. Your leap to conclusion is suppose to end all criticism of LH. Sorry, not going to happen.
Hamilton has brought this all on himself. He lost a race last year and he is mentally suffering from it still. Mr. Masi was replaced because LH through a tantrum. LH is throwing another one over stupid his jewelry. Hamilton himself is undermining his own achievements by acting like a self absorbed, egotistical, narcissistic rube. If he continues on this road, people my soon forget his 7 WDCs and focus on mental state. And it by the way, he is the one that forces people to remember he’s black.

Looks like the FIA are interested in getting into a major p#s.ing contest with Lewis. Will be fun to see who blinks first. If the FIA blinks first, might as well rip up the rules book and call it a day. They will be challenged on everything. If LH backs down, his ego won’t be able to survive it. This could be more interesting than some of the races.

Hi Susan, Hamilton has a few bad races and just look at the number of negative comments. What about all the other whiners in the sport who haven't achieved a fraction of Hamilton's wins. Drivers such as Vettel and Alonso and Ricciardo etc. but nobody jumps all over them. Could it be because they're the right colour? Let's face it, what difference does it make if Lewis wears his hair a different way or chooses to wear some gold medallions or whatever. In this sport, driving is what matters and he can drive despite having a few bad races. Let's also remember that he scored ahead of Russell at Miami and I happen to think Russell is an excellent driver already. Verstappen after five years and change is finally finishing races and doing so cleanly. He will no doubt be one of the greats if he continues to develop as he has these last two years. How about just giving Lewis a break and forgetting colour for at least a year or two. I think he's earned it.

Please leave race out of this. Before the BLM thing, nobody including, Hamilton, made mention of him being black and if he did, it wasn’t the main topic of conversation. He brought it to the forefront. Kneeling before races, having his livery painted black, We Race As One everywhere. Fine, everyone who had been living in a cave for the last 200 years, now knows racism is very very bad. Having said all that, his behavior since last year’s race doesn’t excuse him for his embarrassing behavior. Black, white, green with stripes, complaining, whining, playing the victim of some systemic racism that hadn’t been openly noticed by anybody in F1 doesn’t give him a pass. Man up, except the loss and move on. Putting your mental problems out into the public forum, isn’t going to change the race results. Hamilton is too old to play the poor victim. His enormous wealth that he achieved since being in F1 must give some sense of well being. If not, take some out of the petty cash drawer, and get some help.
As far as his poor performance and crummy car, both will either improve or not. Life is made up of many disappointments, big and small. The successful person can deal with it all.
In regards to other drivers, no one is excluded from griping and complaining, LH with his sense of entitlement, has turned this into an art form. Even down to this petty argument about his jewelry, what he’s going to do or not do. Childish and unbecoming of a grown man, 7 time world champion or not. Vettel, Alsonso and Riccardo pale in comparison. And none of them talk about their mental state.

Vettel has had good reason to vent his frustrations, his time at Ferrari was a waste of his time. His doesn’t spend his life complaining or whining that he lost a race. That goes for Alonso and Ricardo.

Blo, I’m not whining about LH, I’m just making observations about another human being and how he deals with life’s events. My opinions are just that, just like yours. My positivity will be focused on younger drivers that are so happy to have this opportunity and maybe who don’t focus on themselves 24/7. I’m happy to see how Russell takes setbacks and turn them into positive successes. I appreciate Norris’ optimism and can do attitude. It is good to see talented young drivers becoming the new young lions in this exciting sport, while the old guard just goes off into the sunset to conquer other endeavours. After all, it is a young person’s sport.

Another thing that was surprising in his interview, his reasoning for what happened during the race. So many people causing him to get blamed for each and every event. The totally blatant racism that occurred against him. Shocking. Surprised he was able to overcome this and continue on with his career. A lesser person would have given up his dream to combat this injustice. Wow... how does he do it? fighting day after day battling systematic racism in F1. No wonder he’s grumpy.

If memory serves me, no one has told LH what he can or not wear, how to wear his hair. The jewelry is the issue because it can pose a safety issue. It is boring, you’re right. Just lose some of the piercings during the race and all is good. Problem solved. Concentrate on driving the car. Move on! Problem, LH has made it an issue, he likes the attention, distracts from his losy season. Last year rules are rules to the letter, quote Sir Lew, this year, maybe not so much. Your comments are misdirected.

People should watch LH’s post-race interview at the 2011 Monaco GP. Incredibly telling interview. The poor guy has been a victim forever. It wasn’t just Masi but the FIA for years keeping LH down and holding him back because he’s black. How did this poor go on? How did he survive?
