Nov.10 - F1 legend Emerson Fittipaldi has sided with Fernando Alonso over a recent spat with Lewis Hamilton.

Two-time champion Alonso recently suggested that Max Verstappen's back-to-back titles were worth more than many of Hamilton's seven world championships.

"I have a lot of respect for Lewis, but still it is different when you win seven world titles when you only had to fight with your teammate," Alonso told De Telegraaf.

Alonso: Hamilton lifestyle impossible in 'normal' car

Fernando Alonso. & Lewis Hamilton. Formula One - Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, Abu Dhabi GP 2018.

Hamilton hit back with a cryptic photo tweet of the pair as 2007 McLaren teammates, along with a simple 'thumbs up' emoji.

"It's definitely interesting to see the comments that are made, but it doesn't really matter. That's why I just gave the thumbs up," said the Mercedes driver.

Another two-time champion, however, has sided with Alonso.

75-year-old Emerson Fittipaldi, who won his titles in 1972 and 1974, was asked by Vegas Insider to comment on the spat.

"Very difficult to analyse but the point that Fernando mentioned has merit because now it is extremely competitive," the Brazilian said.

"Much more than when Lewis was winning the championships, that was against his teammate. Now, you have Max who is against a lot of different people. If you think about it, yes, Fernando is correct."

"The level, the gap among the top five cars in any qualifying this year is very close. Much closer than when Lewis and Nico (Rosberg) or Lewis and (Valtteri) Bottas were there. They were quite superior to the field.

"Now the field is very close. I like it now."

Emo is so correct! The phenomenon of Mercedes Benz dominating F1 became boring. It's great to see a number of cars now with a chance of winning and being competitive, great to see Ferrari back being competitive with Red Bull as well as Alpine and McLaren becoming more competitive too.
Not taking anything away from Louise's efforts and driving skills, but she did have the most dominant car during that period! It really was hers to lose.

Seriously - its so competitive that Max has it won by Singapore and he's going to smash the win in a season record. Red Bull now have the dominant car - we'll see the difference is that Max will never have a bteam mate allowed to challenge him - so if you the Merc dominance was boring you ain't seen nothing yet. And to say Max win last year is any thing other than an affront to any self respecting sports fan is to live in some wierd delusional denial. And getting off on calling Lewis her - me thinks you have some serious issue's Ol'Smokey

It was bad enough that Mercedes Benz became soo dominant as a constructor. What was galling, and can still raise my hackles, is Lewis Hamilton's jaw-dropping arrogance and entitlement. Then he got a knighthood.

Then his entitlement got amped up when he brought: BLM into the paddock; then he brought Diversity into the paddock; then it got much more specific when he brought LGBTQ2S into the paddock; then it was worldly angst over the condition of the planet; then it was insulting Middle Eastern hosts over their treatment of LGBTQ2S populations; then it was jewelry; then - well, you get the picture. It just never stops.

At some point his became her, Lewis became Lulu, became Lucille and Sir became Dame. It's to be expected when a person - an extremely rich person - puts on airs (see above) and tries to lecture us little people about the next right thing to do. All the while, he gets covered with more and more ink and more and more piercings while he jets around the world in his Gulfstream G-6. Why do handsome men have to maim themselves with that shit? I dunno.

Well, back then to the original point - Emerson and Fernando hit it on the head - he had no credible competition. His WDC's were fait accompli's. And BTW, Fernando was #1 driver before Lucille showed up - and almost straight away started to languish. Frequent DNF's. Poor performance. Preferential treatment? Who knows.

All I know is that we're enjoying a period with three or four teams that are closely matched and we're getting some great races out of the deal.

A great speech, I must admit to championing Lewis's transition to Lucy,Lala ETC ETC,Im not going to rant its all been said, but the last paragraph, would we miss Louise in the sport?, I think the answer is No, there's enough talent there (and more coming)to not miss her at all. The Hamgirls say Awwww what will you do when shes not there anymore , Id say thank Feck, back to racing and no Bulls**t anymore.

This 'we're gonna' miss him when he's gone' rap has been going on for decades about various drivers. Never been true, and Lewie will be no different.

We will miss Loiuse about the same as we would miss a good dose of diarrhoea. F1 needs to concentrate on motor racing, and not the pedantic side issues aired so frequently by Hamilton that have absolutely no relevance to motor racing as a sport or a business.

'If' Max keeps up the garbage he did during the race yesterday, he may find himself looking for a new seat elsewhere in short order, rather than the team continuing to be built around him. No driver should ever be above the team. JMO.

It's so true, Max's first championship went to the very last race and his second one was sooo hard with ferrari and perez fighting so hard and not bottling their strategy every change they get or having unreliable cars (ferrari) that he wrapped it with 4 races to go. True, it's much better than Lewis having to fight until the end on multiple occasion. But yeah, they world champion so they can say whatever, it doesn't change the fact that it's 7 and they only have 2 with absollutely no chance to increase that number

I get it, but please explain Lewis's (Mercedes) dominance. Wrapping up championships by COTA, Starting grid penalties and still finishing on the podium. Does Lewis win without Mercedes? Probably not. Mercedes dominance hurt Lewis's claim of being the best of all time. Hat's off to Mercedes, shameful the rest of the teams were so far behind in development.

Does Lewis win without Mercedes, probably not, that's not the point. Does Max win without current red bull? the answer is no as well. My only problem with those people's statement is they are trying to pretend that the current red bull car didn't just trash Ferrari and that Perez and other teams are fighting hard as well. Ferrari did fight at the beginning, before completely fading just like in 2018 where Vettel was leading until the Germany fiasco. Max, while being a stupid fast driver didn't have to fight so hard this year, that's just fact, and Alonso and Fittipaldi's claim are misplaced because they just want to undervalue Lewis while pretending to ignore facts

Ferrari were strong when they weren't self-destructing. Merc on the other hand have been MIA until the last couple of races. It's been a much more interesting season this year due to a lot more competition.

You had a good argument right up to "absolutely no chance to increase that number". Sounds like you suffer the same 'fan bias' that you criticize. That's good, Lewie needs all the help he can get.

No, I don't think it's fan bias. Absolutely no chance to increase that number" in the case of Fittipaldi is a given, he's not gonna get another championship. As for Alonso...well, unless a Miracle happens at Aston Martin next year, he's not gonna win the championship anytime soon. So that's why I say they will stay at 2 without a chance to increase that number. Unless you know something I don't, then please, I would love to see a season like that where Alonso and Aston are title contenders. As a racing fan, that would be epic

Well, if you stopped being a name calling "fan" who can't argue without covering your eyes, you would understand. I'm asking you, how many times did Lewis wrap his season 4 races before the end? And how many times did it go to the last race? Easy question, just answer it. It doesn't matter who was he fighting with, the question is did it go till the last race or not. For Max, his first championship he did fight till the end, his second one though... You objectively can't say that the title wasn't a sure thing after the summer break. So given those numbers, how are these 2 world champions pretend that Max had to fight so hard this season.

F6 you are funny. But I caution you once again about your multiple concussions, they have clearly impaired your higher cognitive functions.

Your worship of The Dame has, at this point, become unhealthy. You would do well to put aside your "Lewis Hamilton Sock Puppet" before it starts singing you to sleep afterwards.

I can remember Vettel was HAM's main rival in 2017 and 2018. He even was leading the championship in 2018, when he lost it all on Hockenheim in turn 13 (can you believe it) during the German GP while leading the race.

Looks like that was the turning point of his F1 career. Only had 2 wins after that crash and seems to never have recovered from crashing while leading the race.

After Rosberg he didn't even have a teammate that was allowed to fight for the win. Bottas even had to give away the lead a couple of times. I wish Rosberg never had quit. That guy must be the most underrated driver.

Great site to find out all you need to know about WDC winners since 1950:

    https://f1.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_World_Drivers%27_Champions

Fernando is telling the truth when he mentioned Dame Lucille's WDC were a walk-in-the-park. He only ever had one challenger, and that was Nico Rossberg - who won by 5 points.

The Dame's average gap in points for the 6 WDC at Mercedes is 78.5. Vettel had 4 WDC - 2 of which were close (2010=4, 2013=3) average = 138.5. Alonso = 17 (he had to fight all season to win).

In the end, I'd much rather have close racing and bitter rivalries.

True true, I really like that you are bringing actual numbers/facts to the discussion. Now, with that said, I notice you don't talk about Max and yet you say Fernando is telling the "truth". But Fernando didn't compare it to his titles or Vettel's titles, he compared Lewis to Max's. So last year, it was a 8 points gap, but this year Max already has 136 points margin 2 races from the end. So what does that mean? That's more margin than Lewis ever had. Doesn't that show that Max's 2nd title was even more of a walk in the park than anyone else. It sure doesn't show that Max had to fight so hard against others as Fernando is trying to make it look. It's the second highest gap ever. Lewis never has such gap before, in fact, only Vettel in 2013 had more (155). As you said, you prefer close racing but 136 points is not close by any means. So if you go by those numbers, Max's title are not worth more than "Dame Lucille" right?? If you said Fernando's 2 titles are worth more than Max's 2 titles, based on the number you brought how close it was etc..., doesn't that make more sense? Just numbers and facts, no need to bring personal preference about the person.

You won't find me arguing your points. Max's points gap is astonishing - and it speaks to the potential for a year-after-year dominance akin to Dame Lucille's. A total snore-fest. Which none of us want.

The years where the WDC's had small point's gaps were all great years for F1. I would far rather have that level of intense competition - cliff-hanger races.

The races where drivers earn each other's respect and trade a vigorous handshake and slap on the back when it's over.
