As the second practice session for the 2023 Miami Formula 1 Grand Prix began, the track was abuzz with activity.
Max Verstappen set the pace right from the start, putting in a blistering time of 1:30.146 min in his Red Bull RB19. The Dutchman was over 0.6s faster than his teammate Sergio Pérez, both drivers using the medium compound tyres for their first laps.
However, there was a moment of panic for the Haas team when Kevin Magnussen lost control of his car and spun 360 degrees at the chicane just 10 minutes into the session. Fortunately, the Danish driver only brushed the wall with his front tyre, narrowly avoiding more extensive damage to his car. The Haas mechanics breathed a collective sigh of relief as they watched their driver continue on his way around the circuit.
After 15 minutes Verstappen had improved the quickest lap time to 1:29.380, follow by Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc (+0.117s). Pérez was third on +0.242s. The other Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz 4th and Mercedes driver George Russel on P5.
During the second practice session of the Miami Grand Prix, several drivers had trouble navigating through the challenging chicane, much like last year. Kevin Magnussen spun out, while Lewis Hamilton was seen driving over the curbs and Sergio Perez struggled as well.
Meanwhile, Red Bull encountered a problem with Max Verstappen's HANS device, which got stuck with the headrest of his car. The team spent a significant amount of time trying to fix the issue, as it made it challenging for the Dutchman to move his head.
Halfway the session a few cars where getting in some laps on the soft compound tyres with the red Pirelli text. It still was Verstappen who topped the timesheet, with a really fast lap time of 1:28.255. Leclerc was still second, McLaren driver Lando Norris was surprisingly third. Sainz 4th. Fernando Alonso 5th with the Aston Martin and his teammate Lance Stroll on 6th. Alpine driver Esteban Ocon on P7. Williams driver Alex Albon on P8, Magnussen on P9 and Zhou Guanyu 10th.
A few minutes later Max Verstappen clocked in a stunning lap time of 1:27.930, surpassing last year's qualifying time. This proves the track also got faster due to the new tarmac.
With 15 minutes to go Verstappen was still quickest. There where not many drivers doing long runs to get data about how the tyres would perform during the race. A lot of drivers still were driving on soft tyres.
In the final moments of the session, Charles Leclerc suffered a setback when he crashed his Ferrari SF-23 into the barrier in turn 7. The incident occurred as he was conducting a long run on the medium tyres, causing significant damage to the front of his car. As a result, the session was red-flagged with only 10 minutes remaining, and Leclerc was unable to continue.
Last year the quickest lap during FP2 was a 1:29.938 min driven by George Russell with the Mercedes W13.
