What’s Next for Lewis Hamilton?
As one of the most successful race car drivers when looking at statistics, fans and experts are wondering what Lewis Hamilton is looking for next. Because of the struggles at Mercedes, people are wondering whether he will end up leaving the team or not.
Will he leave for Ferrari?
Since 2013, Hamilton has been signed with Mercedes after having raced for McLaren. This surprised many, as Mercedes wasn’t exactly known for bringing several wins home back then. After several successful seasons with six championships to his belt while at Mercedes, the 2022 season, where he drove the Mercedes W13, was marred by a season where he did not achieve a single race win or pole position for the first time in his career and which has sent him into his longest grand prix win drought. The first winless season seems to have activated some new thoughts about his future in Mercedes.
Therefore, the question is what Hamilton wants to achieve next, as his contract with Mercedes expires this season. Many people suspect that he won’t sign a new deal. According to the Daily Mail, Ferrari will offer Lewis Hamilton a spot on their team with a whopping offer of 40 million pounds. He has previously been linked with Ferrari, and some say that Charles Leclerc will become a replacement for Hamilton at the Mercedes team.
His last F1 season with Mercedes?
Even though nothing is confirmed, his time at Mercedes could be in the past. And it will be interesting what the odds will look like when looking at formula 1 betting at betting.com. Will he have better odds at Ferrari than Mercedes? Right now, the odds are +3300 in terms of the Monaco Grand Prix, while drivers like Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc are at +125 and +550 respectively. If he joins Ferrari, he could be in pursuit of becoming the first race driver to win eight world titles.
Because of his struggles at Mercedes, there are good explanations for why he would decide to try out Ferrari, and it would be logical to consider his options. However, there are also good reasons why he could continue on the Mercedes team, as it would be clever to find a long-term connection with them. Also, in both the short grain and long term, Mercedes would give the same opportunities as Ferrari would. The question is whether Hamilton believes that Mercedes can get it together for the 2024 season.
The struggles at Mercedes
As Mercedes introduced turbo-hybrid engines in 2014, the team was headed for great success. However, as the new 2022 cars were designed, there were consequences. Mercedes stuck with their zero-sidepod concept but didn’t manage to give out great performances. Therefore, some would argue that Mercedes hasn’t been a great competitive choice for Hamilton.
The biggest question for Mercedes is the rebuilding for the next season. If they can close the gap, as they have promised their fans in an open letter, it could regain their confidence.
His achievements at other teams
As Hamilton’s contract expires soon, Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff himself has said that they are very aligned with the driver. But as his future is still unknown, it is worth looking at his earlier achievements with McLaren and Mercedes. With McLaren, he had 5 wins in the 2008 season and 10 pole positions. From 2013 to 2021, he had 82 wins with Mercedes.
