Carlos Sainz won his 2nd F1 race at the 2023 Singapore F1 GP today. The Ferrari driver started from pole position and won on the Marina Bay circuit for the first time. It was also his 1st win of the season. Scuderia Ferrari scored their 243th race win.
2023 Singapore Grand Prix Race Report
The Singapore Grand Prix under the lights delivered its usual mix of drama, strategy and intensity. Here's a race report of the thrilling action:
LAP 32-35: The narrative surrounding tyre wear took center stage with drivers like Verstappen lamenting the hard tyre's performance. Most of the drivers found the hard tyres challenging, comparing them to "driving on ice." Russell radioed his eagerness for a win, but his strategy and the difficulty in overtaking limited his options. At this point, the tension among teams about tire strategy and a potential late Safety Car added an element of unpredictability.
LAP 36-40: Red Bull's strategy was under the microscope. Verstappen and Perez's struggles showcased the difficulty of the Singapore Grand Prix. Perez's 250th race wasn't turning out as planned, as he was continuously overtaken. On the 40th lap, Red Bull made a pivotal decision, with Perez pitting for medium tyres. This raised questions about when Verstappen would come in and if Perez would undercut him.
LAP 41-45: Verstappen’s pit-stop saw him barely avoiding a mistake as he almost crossed the white line. Despite a relatively slow pit stop for Red Bull standards, he still managed to rejoin ahead of Perez and Sargeant. As the race moved on, the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) was deployed due to Ocon's car emitting smoke, adding another layer of strategy into the mix. This VSC period saw teams like Mercedes making crucial pit decisions which shuffled the pack.
LAP 46-50: As the race resumed, Ferrari seemed in a strong position with Sainz leading and the Silver Arrows (Mercedes) trying to play catch-up. The gaps began to shrink, particularly as Mercedes cars showed tremendous pace, lapping considerably faster than the Ferraris. By the 50th lap, a potentially controversial pit exit incident was noted involving Perez and Albon.
LAP 51-55: Verstappen, on his fresh mediums, continued to claw his way through the field. Up front, Russell's gap to leader Sainz was diminishing at a rapid pace. However, Norris was proving to be an effective buffer for Ferrari, with his car positioned between the hard-charging Mercedes of Russell and leader Sainz.
LAP 56-59: The race was heading for a thrilling conclusion. Bottas retired with a gear shift issue, further underscoring the demanding nature of the Singapore circuit. The top four cars were all closely packed, and every move had implications for the race win. A stoppage by Albon added further tension but did not lead to a Safety Car.
LAP 60-62: With just a few laps to go, Sainz used his experience and strategy to back Norris into the Mercedes, using the DRS to his advantage. With Norris and Russell battling, it became clear that the Mercedes was struggling in the Ferrari's dirty air. With the intense squabbles and cars sliding around, Sainz looked to have sealed his victory, owing Norris a huge thank you.
FINAL LAP: In a season dominated by Red Bull, it was clear this race wasn't going their way. As Sainz began the final lap, drama struck when Russell, in a desperate attempt to overtake Norris, ended up crashing into the wall at Turn 10. This sealed the deal for Sainz and Ferrari, providing an unexpected yet thrilling end to a dramatic race under the Singapore lights.
This Singapore Grand Prix will surely be remembered not just for its intense on-track battles but also the strategic decisions made off it. A masterclass in tire strategy, teamwork, and the unpredictable nature of racing.

Those first 50 odd laps were as dull as it gets - even by Singapore standards, Good ending though with Sainz playing a master’s game. I realize Leclerc is quick but I would hire Sainz as my #1 in a heartbeat.
Definitely not dull even by Singapore standards, but more or less the same as always, i.e., leader driving slower than usual on other circuits, which creates train effect, etc., & given general overtaking difficulty, even DRS train battles can be exciting because something can always happen.

If I was running F1 (for profit) I'd charge a premium to watch the start and after that another one for the bar...

Danica Patrick is right RIC is at the end of his career. Lawson is the future.
Whether it is RIC or TSU ad his team mate is up to the team , but Lawson shoulx be first choice.

Karma slapped the doc for his arrogance but VER did a good job to go 11th to 5th, and PER was OK from 13th to 8th. IMO, LAW is the future for RB. Pair him w/RIC on the B team & let him mature.
Observation: Bernie Collins is GREAT addition to the SKYguys. Breath of fresh air & flatass knows her racing. Advice, get rid of Brundle's grid walk (did you see him insult PIA?) and let her do 10 min. on each team's best strategy. And eliminate Danica & Naomi.
Not sure about waiting to mature. I'm always a fan of letting them step up. Just give them the best car and watch:-)
Totally agree. Bernie Collins is a jewel, great insight into the ins and out of racing. Not sure why Danica Patrick is even commenting about F1, she brings nothing to the race. Brundle’s grid walk is a loser for Brundle. Nothing good ever happens. Lose the celebrities, they are just there for publicity. Most look like they are bored to tears.
I'd like also to jump on the wagon & say that Bernie Collins is absolutely brilliant. 😜

I purposely refuse to watch Brundle's grid walk, because he always manages to talk to oxygen thieves (also known as "celebrities") who are only there for their own publicity and wouldn't know one end of an F1 car from the other!
As for Danica, I don't mind her. At least she has some credibility, even if it's not F1. But as for Naomi, she is completely out of her depth and as she tries to sound like she knows what she is talking about it makes her sound worse! Dismiss her!
This is getting very confusing when i keep seeing Bernie, I immediately think of Mr E, anyway I'm sure with time that will fade, Brundles alright , he knows his stuff, a bit heavy on Hannah most of the time but, if hes told to talk/interview/wind up th celebs then that's what hell do, as to the Danica V Naomi thing, this is going to sound bad, cause I cant be bothered to comment, id just be repeating myself, but Smokey you are correct
Any driver needs a fast car to win, boy was that proved in Singapore by Max.Even with his much vaunted talent he was nowhere.Careless driving from Lando and George, Lando was lucky so was Carlos, he may have lost his win if Lando had crashed.
Max more than 20secs behind the winner in a go slow race! C’mon this couldn’t smell more like manipulation for spectacle. He still has his record wins, he’s still going to win the world championship as are RB.RB are playing the game for Liberty.

I’m sure we can agree that the business of F1 is money R.O.R and it’s also been openly discussed that the dominance of one team could have a negative effect on revenues should boredom set in, in the Merc era as well as the R.B. one.
It's not beyond the realms of possibility in any sport/business... Boredom was on the horizon.....

What an incredible drive by Max. Lets see junk car, poor race strategy (RB should have just sent him out and told him its up to you to drive to the front instead of here's a set of hards lets hope it works out) and then bad luck with the SC and VSC and he still manages to drive from 11th to 5th. He almost took 4th by shaving almost 19 sec off Leclerc's advantage over the last 6 laps. If hammy had the same weekend all wed be hearing about is how hammy walked on water.
It definitely was. Singapore is definitely a challenging course, track, weather, humidity. Going from 11th to 5th is just another example of the quality driver that he has proven to be. Happy for Ferrari, they needed a good weekend. Sainz definitely showcased his talent with the help of Lando. Ham will always walk on water with faithful followers, sorry for George.

One trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere, like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Give me five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now, where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones..
