Verstappen Triumphs in Tense Spanish Grand Prix
Round 10 of the 2024 Formula 1 season brought the action to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for an exhilarating Spanish Grand Prix. Max Verstappen clinched his third consecutive victory at the venue, starting from second on the grid and overtaking early to secure the win. Lando Norris, who started from pole, finished a close second, while Lewis Hamilton achieved his first podium of the season by finishing third.
Race Recap
The race began with George Russell making an impressive start from third, surging past Verstappen and Norris to take the lead. However, Verstappen quickly regained his composure, overtaking Russell with a DRS-assisted move on Lap 3. Norris also managed to pass Russell, settling into second place behind Verstappen.
As the race progressed, different strategies came into play. Norris, running a strong pace, pitted later than Verstappen and switched to used soft tyres for a final stint push. Despite a valiant effort and closing the gap to under three seconds, Norris could not overtake Verstappen, who managed his tyres effectively to maintain his lead.
Hamilton, who had a poor start, battled his way back through the field, overtaking both Ferraris and his teammate Russell to secure third place. This marked Mercedes' return to form, with both cars showing competitive pace throughout the weekend.
Key Moments
- Verstappen's Decisive Move: Verstappen's race-winning move came early on Lap 3 when he used DRS to pass Russell and take the lead. This set the tone for the rest of his race.
- Norris' Strong Performance: Despite losing the lead at the start, Norris demonstrated McLaren's impressive race pace, pushing Verstappen until the final laps.
- Hamilton's Recovery: Hamilton's drive from a poor start to finish on the podium highlighted Mercedes' strategic excellence and his racecraft.
Team and Driver Reactions
Christian Horner, Red Bull Team Principal, praised Verstappen's performance, stating, "Max drove a brilliant race today, and strategically we got it just right. His pass on George was crucial, and he managed the race superbly."
Lando Norris expressed mixed emotions after the race, saying, "The car was incredible today, and we were the quickest. It’s frustrating to lose the win, but there are lots of positives to take forward."
Lewis Hamilton was upbeat about his result: "It's been a good day and a good weekend. The strategy and pit stops were on point, and it's great to be back on the podium."
Championship Standings
Verstappen's victory extends his lead in the Drivers' Championship, now 69 points ahead of Norris, who moved into second place, overtaking Charles Leclerc. The battle for the championship is heating up, with the next two races in Austria and Silverstone expected to be crucial.
Looking Ahead
The Spanish Grand Prix marked the start of a triple-header, with the Austrian Grand Prix up next. This will be a Sprint weekend, adding another layer of excitement. Norris, who is determined to make up for the missed opportunity in Spain, will be aiming for a strong performance at a track where McLaren traditionally performs well.
With the field getting closer and the driver market starting to heat up, the season promises more thrilling races and unexpected twists. Fans are eagerly anticipating the next round as the 2024 F1 season continues to deliver high-octane action and drama.
Stay tuned for all the build-up to the Austrian Grand Prix, where the battle for supremacy in Formula 1 resumes.

A decent race for Circuit De Catalunya's standards & as expected, another victory for Max, albeit a good start for George, even if only a short-lived benefit.
Good race for Alpine, & as a result, they overtook Haas for P7 in the constructors' standings.
What a race by Logan, though, ending up as the only driver to have lapped twice by the eventual winner.
Checo is also among this race's biggest disappointments.
Finally, a podium appearance for Lewis.
Max deserved that. How Lando gets DOTD after that effed up start is a mystery. Nice to see the Mercs in the hunt and hopefully bodes well for congestion at the front. Another masterclass from Checo.
good to see youve joined the fansite sarcasm club finally JJ
I've been sarcastic before as well.
F1 website has been really slow - Haven't even been able to visit before it times out lately. Ok now tho
Maybe Lando's wasn't DOTD but he's DOTMoment
Give the young guns the car to get to the front - that's all
Leopold been partying again, celebrating Maxes 24 championship, yeah the sites been off and on a bit recently but, i think he maintains it single handed, so deserves a bit of slack between parties, Proost all
Thanks for the feedback guys. We have some technical problems, I hope to have solved it very soon. It's very annoying, believe me I know.
