Looking ahead to the 2014 F1 season
This season’s F1 has left many fans disillusioned. Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull’s dominance has been a turn off for many spectators as nearly all the excitement has evaporated. Unless the other car manufacturers can step it up next season then we will see more of the same. Vettel is priced at evens to retain his crown next year, so can anyone actually beat him? Let’s take a look at the top contenders.
Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton is priced at 9/2 by Paddy Power to win next year’s title. The Mercedes driver is actually the fastest driver on the track but was let down by the durability of his tires this season with a puncture at Silverstone wrecking his chances of winning the British Grand Prix. The Mercedes car has had the pace this season, with Hamilton managing to achieve five poles, but the fact he has only turned one of these poles into a victory highlights the unpredictability of the Mercedes. By next season Hamilton would have had a year to get to grips with the car and if team principle Ross Brawn irons out the flaws then Hamilton probably has the best chance of anyone to usurp Vettel.
Fernando Alonso
The Spaniard has trailed behind Vettel throughout the season as his Ferrari lacks the competiveness needed to challenge the German. Alonso has driven a slow car this season which is highlighted by the fact that he has failed to achieve a single pole this year. What Alonso, still a favourite with F1 betting fans, does possess is a menacing tenacity which sees him sometimes recklessly go for the overtake. This aggressive style of driving will be vital next year if he is going to stand a chance of success. If Scuderia can improve the speed of their car then Alonso will be right in contention.
Kimi Raikkonen
The Lotus driver is moving back to Ferrari and is priced by Paddy Power at 13/2 for next season. The cool Finn has similar characteristics to Vettel and the move to a better team could give him a chance of taking the title. His success depends on whether he has to play second fiddle to Alonso.
