Esteban Gutierrez has said that the probable return of the Mexico Grand Prix would be “a dream come true”. The 23-year-old is one of two Mexican drivers on the grid and both he and his compatriot, Sergio Pérez, have spoken glowingly about the race’s potential 2015 return.
It is expected that Mexico will return to the Formula One calendar next year for the first time in over 20 years.
Gutierrez, of Sauber, can’t hide his excitement. “This is some of the greatest news of my career. A Mexican Grand Prix would be the most fantastic experience for me- to race in front of my people. Mexico has a long F1 history, so the fascination with F1 is still in their genes”.
Mexican F1 driver Sergio Pérez
Gutierrez and Force India driver, Perez have spoken emotionally about driving in front of their people, something that evades many Mexican drivers. If a talented youngster is spotted, he is often whisked off to Europe before competing seriously in his home country. Gutierrez had a taste in 2008 when he competed in the world finals of Formula BMW.
Mexico is sure to sell out the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, which hosted the last Mexico Grand Prix in 1992, unlike many modern race venues. The passion for F1 over there is just as strong as in Europe. In 2011, between 150,000-200,000 people lined the streets to see Sergio Pérez. The former McLaren driver described the news as, “…one of the best days of my life”.
The circuit is likely to undergo a series of improvement before it can be deemed as suitable, but mouths are salivating at the thought of seeing drivers go round the legendary Peraltada corner, which is similar to the Parabolica at Monza but much faster.
The date for the race is not clear but it is expected to feature towards the end of the calendar.
