Sebastian Vettel has said that he doesn't know whether or not he will compete in qualifying for the United States Grand Prix.

The outgoing world champion is threatened with the prospect of being forced to use a sixth engine, which breaches the limit of five.

Vettel is also running low on his allocated number of other engine parts, so a major overhaul of the system would force him to start from the pit lane. By not running in qualifying, he would save the new system mileage.

“Yes, we have to get an extra engine at some stage this year and it’s very, very likely for this weekend”, he said.

“Obviously we had quite a bad first half of the season in terms of reliability, a lot of things happening which put us in that position.”

“Practice we’ll definitely run and try to maximise the track time but more focus towards probably the race because qualifying for us is maybe not that important if it comes down to a Sunday where we start  from the pit lane due to the regulations.”

Vettel has only three races left as a Red Bull driver, before he moves to Ferrari.
