Former Formula 1 driver Allan McNish has said that Nico Rosberg has an easier job than Lewis Hamilton, as the pair head into next week’s decider in Abu Dhabi.

Hamilton leads his Mercedes team-mate by 17 points but the new double points rule means that the German has an increased chance of winning, even though Hamilton is still the overwhelming favourite.

Scottish driver McNish, says that Rosberg knows what he has to do, while Hamilton could get caught:

“Rosberg has to win and hope Hamilton finishes lower than second for whatever reason.  He can’t control what Hamilton does. So Rosberg will just focus on doing what he can”, he wrote in his BBC Sport column.

Why Lewis Hamilton loves AmericaHe added: “From a championship perspective at the last race like this, it is easier to be behind than in front. When you are in front, it’s easy to feel that you can only lose it. When you’re behind you can lose it and win it, but as you’re behind already you’ve kind of lost it anyway.”

It is expected that Mercedes will be dominant once again but McNish has said that they can’t be complacent:

“Mercedes may not have things their own way in Abu Dhabi. The track has long straights and the Williams cars have always got better top speeds than the Mercedes.”

Rosberg won the last race in Brazil and will see victory as a necessity next week.
