Tomorrow it is expected that McLaren will decide whether they keep Jenson Button or Kevin Magnussen for the 2015 season and end months of unnecessary speculation.

The dithering and dallying of boss Ron Dennis and his fellow board of directors has been frustrating for both drivers as they wait to discover who will partner Fernando Alonso.

On paper, Button should be the favourite. He is a former world champion, a winner of 15 Grand Prix’s, a veteran of 266 races and one of the most intelligent drivers on the grid.

However, McLaren have invested a lot of time and money in the career of Magnussen and they won’t feel comfortable hiding him away after a debut year, which was supposed to be a learning curve ahead of a stellar career.

But for where McLaren are at now, Button should be the answer.

They need to get back to the top quickly and have hired the excellent Alonso to lead them. Button will push the Spaniard hard, and already has a successful working relationship with new engine suppliers Honda.

The speed of progress will undoubtedly be quicker with Jenson in the seat, but Magnussen represents the future and McLaren has always been keen on young drivers.

Tomorrow, one of them will be cruelly spat out of the sport, maybe for good in Button’s case, who should lament the fact that he didn't find out while the season was still ongoing so that he could say goodbye, if necessary, to the fans who adore him.

Magnussen can feel more relaxed, his time will come sooner or later. But tomorrow could be a major set-back for his young career, or the end of his more illustrious team-mate.
