Ex-Formula 1 driver Jean-Pierre Beltois has died after a double stroke , aged 77.

The Frenchman died at his holiday home in Dakar, Senegal.

The ex-racer memorably won the 1972 Monaco grand prix for BRM, in what was the teams last ever race success, while he also scored eight podiums in an 84-race F1 career.

The French motor sport federation (FFSA) released a statement saying that Beltois “is and will remain an example for a whole generation of drivers.”

Beltois reached F1 against the odds in 1967, three years after a serious crash which left him with limited movement in his left arm.

He drove for Matra until 1971 before moving to BRM, where he beat Jacky Ickx in the wet race at Monte-Carlo the following year.
