New Red Bull driver Daniil Kvyat will compete for race wins this year, according to Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost.

The Russian driver left Toro Rosso in the close season to replace Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull, and despite his young age his former team boss expects big things.

Tost told AUTOSPORT: “It was not planned that he goes there after one year. It was planned that he stays with us at least two years.

“But that’s the situation and with his talent and working attitude he will do a good job with Red Bull Racing, as he did with us.

“No one expected that after winning the GP3 title he would come into Formula 1 and score points in the first race.

“He will put on the same good performance at Red Bull Racing.”

Kvyat was chosen ahead of the more experienced Jean-Eric Vergne to replace four-time champion Vettel, which highlights the faith shown in him by the Red Bull hierarchy.

He will race alongside Daniel Ricciardo.
