Lotus driver Pastor Maldonado has said that his team have made a big step forward with their 2015 car.

The Venezuelan topped the timesheets on day one of the second pre-season test in Barcelona yesterday, and he is in a positive mood ahead of the new season.

He told reporters:  “The car is a step forward although how big is the step is difficult to say. But for sure there is a step forward, but is looks good. We still need to improve a few things in the car but it’s quite positive.”

Lotus suffered a dismal season last year, as they went from regular podium finishes in 2013, to lowly backmarkers.

This season they have changed to Mercedes engines, while they are more confident in the aerodynamic design of the car.

Maldonado is joined at Lotus by Frenchman Romain Grosjean, who will be entering his fourth season with the team.

The first race gets underway in three weeks’ time.
