Is 2015 the year of the porsche?
In a couple of months time German pro racing driver Nico Hülkenberg will be seated behind the wheel of the new prototype third Porsche 919 Hybrid as he prepares to race the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The race is the oldest endurance race for sports cars which has been held annually ever since back in 1923. Le Mans is located towards the North West of France and this year’s racing extravaganza will be held on the 13th and 14th June 2015.
In preparation for the event the 27 year old Hülkenberg, who currently drives for Formula One team Force India, will be using the time in between the Chinese and Spanish Grand Prix’s to tackle the six-hour World Endurance Championship race to be held at Spa-Francorchamps. The Spa race will be run on the 2nd May and Hülkenberg’s involvement will mark the first time that an active Formula One driver has participated in the event since 2009, when French racer Sebastien Bourdais took part racing on behalf of Peugeot.
German manufacturer Porsche has had a lot of previous success in long distance racing events. In fact it’s managed to accumulate no less than 23,000 victories in its illustrious racing career. A total of 16 of these victories were won at 24 Hours of Le Mans with its first being back in 1970 where they raced the now iconic Porsche 917. The race is also known as the ‘Battle of the Titans’ and the winning racers for the Porsche KG Salzburg team was former F1 and German sports car driver Hans Herrmann and the UK’s Richard Attwood.
Nico finished in 9th place in last season’s F1 standings with 96 points, just ahead of his Mexican team mate Sergio Pérez who finished in 10th, which both Hülkenberg and Force India are hoping they can both improve on in 2015. The season begins on 15th March at the Australian Grand Prix and Force India is hoping to run out their new car on the second day of the final pre-season test in Barcelona. Chances are you haven’t got yourself a decent set of wheels so emulating the success of Nico Hülkenberg may prove difficult. That is unless you can pick up your very own sports car by entering the Euro Palace Porsche Casino promotion.
