Lewis Hamilton has said that starting on pole position for tomorrow’s Australian Grand Prix is a “great start” to the new season.
The defending champion thrashed his team-mate, Nico Rosberg, by 0.6s and will start as the overwhelming favourite to win the first race of the season.
Felipe Massa starts for third for Williams, ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen for Ferrari. However, their pace is more than one second a lap slower than Mercedes.
Hamilton told reporters: “It has been a great start to the weekend. It doesn't feel like a long time since the last race. We found a good balance today and it was just about pushing those laps. It is so much fun in qualifying pushing those single laps.”
Rosberg admitted that he wasn’t close to beating Hamilton, but he hopes that he can repeat his result from last season’s race where he claimed victory.
He said: "Lewis was on impressive form today. He absolutely nailed it so well done to him. For me, it wasn't a great day today but I am thankful to the team for the car they have given me. It really is a pleasure to drive.
"I have to live with the performance in P2 but tomorrow is a long day."
