Kimi Raikkonen led a Ferrari 1-2 in the first practice session ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Finn set a 1:37.827s to pip his team-mate Sebastian Vettel by just 0.202s late on in the session, to come top for the first time this season.

Vettel missed a large chunk of the session with an engine issue, but he put that behind him to go fastest momentarily.

Williams driver Valtteri Bottas was third quickest, and a further 0.369s behind, ahead of Carlos Sainz and Daniel Ricciardo.

World champion Lewis Hamilton focused on long runs and came 16th quickest, one place below his championship rival Nico Rosberg.

McLaren suffered a mixed session as Fernando Alonso finished seventh fastest, but Jenson Button completed just two laps due to a spin at the first corner.

His engine cut out mid-way through the turn, in another major blow for suppliers Honda.

The second session starts at 4pm GMT.
