A stunning lap from Nico Rosberg was good enough to secure pole position for tomorrow’s Spanish Grand Prix.

The German finished 0.25s clear of Lewis Hamilton, who couldn’t respond on his final run of the session.

Sebastian Vettel lines up third for Ferrari, but his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen had another poor session and finished seventh.

Valtteri Bottas will start fourth for Williams, ahead of Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen for Toro Rosso.

But Rosberg’s pole is the major story of the day, as it is his first of the season.

The 29-year-old looked closer to Hamilton all weekend, and finally put together an unbeatable lap on his first run of Q3.

Hamilton will not be too upset though, and will fancy his chances of victory tomorrow.

Elsewhere, there was no sign of progress at McLaren as Fernando Alonso finished 13th and Jenson Button 14th, behind the Lotus pair of Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado.

Force India’s prediction of a dismal weekend has been confirmed as both drivers crashed out in the first part of qualifying.
