Rosberg had sympathy for Hamilton

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has revealed that he felt sorry for Lewis Hamilton in the wake of the Monaco Grand Prix, which was taken away from the English driver.

Hamilton dominated the weekend and was set to clinch his second victory in the principality until a late safety car was called after an accident between Max Verstappen and Romain Grosjean.

Mercedes called Hamilton into the pits for fresh tyres as they feared that he could come under attack from Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel. But, the team mis-calculated the size of his lead and he emerged in third, gifting the win to his German team-mate.

Rosberg says it is important for win to keep the pressure on Hamilton and continue to close in on his world championship lead.

“It is important to keep it going, it has been a good run of results now and I want to keep it going and the opportunity is here in Montreal,” he said.

“I have this positive experience behind me now in Monaco, eventually it turned out to be a great experience for me and so I am good to go.

“It was a special day in the end, of course it wasn’t as emotional as if it was 100 per cent self-made, but still it was great because a win is a win in racing.

“The sport is harsh and I’ve learnt to accept that and this time the racing gods were on my side big time.

“So I take it, but of course I felt for the other side because it was a horrible way to end the weekend and very undeserved, but that is the way it is and I have this positive experience behind me.”
