The Italian Grand Prix could be saved as reports emerge that Imola is in talks to take over as its host from 2017.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has been locked in talks with long-term hosts Monza for over a year, and is adamant that they must pay the same as other European venues if it wants to keep its place on the calendar.

However, they aren’t keen on stumping up the cash and it has looked likely that one of F1’s crown jewels will drop of the calendar.

But, Motorsport.com reports that Ecclestone has held talks with Imola , which has not held a race since 2006, about moving the race to the historic track.

Imola was the home of the San Marino Grand Prix, but the circuit fell off the calendar in order to undergo major renovation work and has not yet returned.

Ecclestone is said to be keen on the idea after meeting with the city’s mayor in London today.
