Alonso could have Silverstone penalty
Fernando Alonso’s miserable season may get worse this weekend, as a possible engine penalty may make the McLaren driver start from the back of the grid at the British Grand Prix.
The Spaniard has retired from each of the last four races, and was handed a 25-grid penalty before Kimi Raikkonen crashed into him on the opening lap in Austria.
However, that incident seems to have caused even more damage than first anticipated, as Alonso’s engine may need changing.
If it does, then he will be handed another substantial penalty as it will mean that he uses a sixth engine of the season.
Honda chief Yasuhisa Arai said: “We have since completed thorough checks of both power units back at the factory.
"We believe that Fernando's power unit has sustained damage from the accident, and it may be necessary to change the engine.
"As for Jenson's power unit this weekend, the issue is still under investigation."
