Fernando Alonso insists that his performance in the Belgian Grand Prix yesterday was his “best” around the famous track.

The Spaniard has never won at the venue, and finished in 13th yesterday, behind Sebastian Vettel, who stopped running two laps before the end.

McLaren suffered one of their most embarrassing weekends since the beginning of the season, but from a personal perspective, Alonso was pleased.

"It's probably my best race at Spa. That's the way it is,” he said.

"Even though the position is not the best, I had 40 seconds over Button, who was on pole position and won the race here three years go.

"In 44 laps it means like a second per lap with the same car, so that's what I'm staying with."

Despite the humiliation of finishing so low down, Alonso believes that they did as best as they could.

He said: “It went a bit better than expected. The car was good during the race. It was very windy today and we were worried that it would be a difficult race, but in terms of handling the car was good. We were lacking power on the straights."
