Fifty-three years ago today, Formula 1 lost one of its brightest young talents. [François Cevert](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-drivers/francois-cevert/) died on October 6, 1973, during qualifying for the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. He was 29 years old. Cevert was born in Paris on February 25, 1944, and made his Formula 1 debut (driving an F1 car) at the [1970 Dutch Grand Prix](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-result/results-1970-formula-1-grand-prix-of-the-netherlands/) with Tyrrell. He had driven an F2 car for Tecno in the 1969 German Grand Prix, which was not eligible for World Championship points. He quickly established himself as one of the most promising drivers of his generation. His first and only Grand Prix victory came at the [1971 United States Grand Prix](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-result/results-1971-formula-1-grand-prix-of-the-united-states/) at Watkins Glen, where he led home Jo Siffert and Ronnie Peterson. Cevert finished third in the 1971 World Championship, his best result. In 1973, he was [Jackie Stewart's](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-drivers/jackie-stewart/) teammate at Tyrrell and was widely expected to lead the team after Stewart's retirement at the end of the season. By that point in the season, he had scored seven podium finishes, including six second places. The accident occurred during Saturday morning practice. Cevert's Tyrrell left the track at the fast Esses section and hit the barrier on the outside of the corner. He was killed instantly. Stewart had planned to retire at the end of the 1973 season, with the United States Grand Prix set to be his 100th and final race. Instead, the entire [Tyrrell](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-teams/tyrrell-f1-information-statistics/) team withdrew from the event following Cevert's death, ending Stewart's career at Watkins Glen without taking the start and giving up the team's chances of winning the Constructors' Championship. Cevert left behind a legacy as one of the most elegant and beloved drivers of his era. His death marked the end of an era for Tyrrell, and Stewart never raced again. **Today, we remember François Cevert.
