Behind the three letters sits everything that can go wrong on a Sunday afternoon. ## What does DNF mean in Formula 1? DNF stands for **Did Not Finish** and is used in the classification when a driver started the race but did not complete it. It is one of a handful of classification codes the FIA uses on official results, alongside DSQ (Disqualified), DNS (Did Not Start) and NC (Not Classified, for drivers who finished but did not complete 90 per cent of the winner's distance). ## Common causes of a DNF - **Power unit failure:** ICE, MGU-K, MGU-H, ES or turbo failures still account for a meaningful share of retirements each season; - **Gearbox and driveshaft failures:** among the sport's most stubborn mechanical problems; - **Hydraulic failures:** often terminal because they take out gear selection and DRS at once; - **Collision damage:** either terminal at the moment of impact or a slow retirement due to accumulated damage; - **Suspension failure:** historically caused by kerb strikes or first-lap contact; - **Driver retirement:** occasionally called in on medical grounds or to preserve components at the end of a race with no realistic points on offer. ## Why the classification matters The FIA classifies any driver who completes at least 90 per cent of the winner's distance as a finisher, whether or not they are still running at the flag. Below that threshold a driver is either DNF (if they stopped on track) or NC. Reliability records, career finishes and constructors' finishing rates all feed off these codes, so the difference between DNF and NC can matter for the record book even when both feel like the same result at the trackside. ## Frequently asked questions about DNF ### What does DNF mean in F1? DNF stands for Did Not Finish and is used in the classification when a driver started the race but did not complete it, whether through mechanical failure, collision or retirement. ### What is the difference between DNF and NC? A DNF is a driver who stopped before the finish. NC (Not Classified) is a driver who reached the flag but completed less than 90 per cent of the winner's distance. ### Do DNF drivers score points? No. Points are awarded to the top ten classified finishers. A driver who stops on the last lap can be classified if they have crossed the finish line and completed enough of the race distance. ### What is the most common cause of a Formula 1 DNF?
