# DRS - Drag Reduction System

**For 14 seasons the Drag Reduction System (DRS) defined what an overtake looked like in Formula 1.** A flap in the rear wing, a button on the steering wheel and a one-second gap to the car ahead were enough to turn a long straight into a passing opportunity. The 2026 regulations retire DRS in favour of fully active aerodynamics, but the system that arrived in 2011 still shapes how a generation of drivers, engineers and fans think about Grand Prix racing.
## What is DRS in Formula 1?
DRS is a driver-controlled, [FIA](https://www.fia.com/)-regulated overtaking aid introduced for the 2011 Formula 1 season. It allows the pursuing driver to open a flap in the rear wing on designated parts of the circuit, reducing aerodynamic drag and increasing straight-line speed. The goal was simple: F1 cars had become so aero-dependent that following another car closely was extremely difficult, and overtaking was disappearing as a result. The FIA introduced DRS to give the trailing car a calibrated speed boost without altering the underlying philosophy of the cars.
## How DRS works: the rear wing flap explained
The system uses an actuator to lift a flap on the upper plane of the rear wing. With the flap closed, the rear wing produces the downforce the car was designed around. With the flap open, surface area drops sharply, drag falls, and the car accelerates more freely down the straight. The FIA estimates the typical speed gain at roughly **10 to 12 km/h (about 6 to 7.5 mph)** by the end of an activation zone. The driver opens DRS by pressing a button on the steering wheel and the flap closes automatically the moment the driver lifts off or touches the brake pedal.
## When can a driver use DRS?
### The one-second rule and detection points
In a race, DRS becomes available only when the pursuing driver is within one second of the car ahead at the relevant **detection point**. Each DRS zone has its own detection line painted on the track, followed later by an **activation line** and an upright "DRS" panel marking the start of the zone itself. The one-second gap is measured at the detection point only, so a driver who is more than a second back at detection cannot use DRS in that zone, even if they close to within a tenth before activation.
### Practice and qualifying
From 2011 to 2012 drivers could use DRS anywhere on the circuit in practice and qualifying. The FIA, on the recommendation of technical delegate Charlie Whiting, tightened the rule for 2013 so that DRS could only be used in the designated zones in every session. The change was made on safety grounds after concerns that drivers were opening DRS too early on corner exits during low-stakes laps.
## When DRS is disabled
The FIA has built several lockouts into the system. DRS is automatically unavailable:
- for the **first two laps** of a race;
- for the **first two laps** after every Safety Car or red-flag restart;
- under **yellow flags** covering the DRS zone;
- in **wet or damp conditions** if Race Direction judges the surface unsafe.
The wet-weather lockout is the most consequential of the four. With the rear wing open the car loses downforce, and on a wet surface the risk of aquaplaning rises sharply. Race Direction can re-enable DRS once the track dries or the rain eases, and on damp circuits with no standing water it is sometimes switched back on mid-session.
## The 2026 farewell: DRS replaced by active aero
After fourteen seasons, DRS is being removed from Formula 1. The 2026 technical regulations replace it with a fully integrated active-aerodynamics system that adjusts both the front and rear wings. Engineers refer to two modes: **X-Mode**, the low-drag setting used on the straights, broadly playing the role DRS used to play, and **Z-Mode**, the high-downforce default used through the corners. Critically, drivers will be able to switch between modes without needing to be within a second of the car ahead, although X-Mode zones will still be defined per circuit. The new system arrives alongside a manual battery-deployment override that gives the chasing driver an additional energy boost on the straights.
## Why DRS has divided fans
Few rule changes in modern F1 have generated as much debate. Supporters point out that DRS rescued the sport from a stagnant overtaking era and gave Race Direction a tool that could be tuned per circuit. Critics counter that "DRS passes" can feel manufactured, especially on long straights where the trailing driver effectively breezes past without a meaningful fight. The truth has always sat in the middle: a well-placed DRS zone produces wheel-to-wheel battles into braking zones, while a badly placed one creates one-shot, undefendable passes. The 2026 active-aero rules are an attempt to keep the benefit while removing the asymmetry.

### When was DRS introduced in Formula 1?

### How much faster does DRS make an F1 car?

### Will DRS still exist in 2026?
No. The 2026 Formula 1 technical regulations remove DRS entirely and replace it with active aerodynamics.
