# Podium

The podium during the 2022 F1 Grand Prix of Italy

**The podium is where the top three drivers of a Formula 1 race are honoured, and where the constructors' championship is celebrated in trophy form.** The tradition combines a strict [FIA](https://www.fia.com/) ceremony with 60 years of accumulated ritual: the anthems, the trophies, the champagne, the driver interviews. For a Grand Prix winner, the podium is the moment that becomes the photograph.

## What is the podium in F1?

The podium is the raised platform on which the top three finishers of a Grand Prix stand to receive their trophies. FOM builds the podium above or near the start-finish line, decorated in circuit-specific branding. The winning driver stands on the tallest central step, second place to their right, and third place to their left. Behind them, a nominated senior representative of the winning constructor accepts the constructors' trophy.

## The ceremony

The FIA-mandated podium ceremony runs in a fixed order:

- the top three drivers walk from the parc-ferme area up to the podium;
- the national anthem of the winning driver is played;
- the national anthem of the winning constructor is played;
- trophies are presented by dignitaries chosen by the promoter;
- champagne (or non-alcoholic sparkling wine at certain events) is sprayed;
- the drivers descend for a short live TV interview conducted by a former driver.

## Champagne and non-alcoholic exceptions

Champagne on the podium has been a Formula 1 tradition since Dan Gurney sprayed his after winning Le Mans in 1967. At venues where alcohol conflicts with local sensitivities, notably Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, the podium uses a non-alcoholic rose water or sparkling substitute. [Ferrari](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-teams/ferrari-f1-information-statistics/) podium bottles at Monza became a tradition of their own over decades of celebration.

## The constructors' trophy

The constructors' trophy is presented alongside the drivers' trophies. It goes to a nominated senior representative of the winning team, most often the team principal, chief mechanic or a member of the works engineering leadership. Team members watching from the pit wall break into the podium celebrations by climbing onto the pit lane below, joining in the champagne shower from the level below the steps.
