Ivan Capelli was born on May 24, 1963, in Milan, Italy. He started his racing career in go-karts when he was just 11 years old and quickly made his way up the ranks of motorsport. He won the Italian Formula 3 Championship in 1984 and then made his Formula One debut in 1985 for the team Tyrrell.
Capelli had a successful Formula One career that spanned from 1985 to 1993. He raced for a variety of teams including March, Leyton House, and Ferrari. However, it was his time with Leyton House that he is most remembered for. In 1990, Capelli achieved a career-best finish of second place at the French Grand Prix, beating out the likes of Ayrton Senna.
Capelli was known not only for his driving skill, but also for his great sense of humor and positive attitude. One anecdote that highlights his humor and personality occurred during the 1991 Monaco Grand Prix. After crashing out of the race, when asked by marshals if he was alright, Capelli replied, "Yes, but have you seen Senna? He won the race, right? Typical, he always takes the easy route!"
Capelli retired from Formula One at the end of the 1993 season, but he continued to race in various other series such as the BPR Global GT Series and the Italian GT Championship. In 2002, he founded his own team called K+K Racing, which competed in the Italian Formula 3 Championship.
Today, Capelli is a successful businessman and continues to be involved in the motorsport world. He is a regular guest at Formula One races and events, and his legacy as a talented driver and a good-natured personality lives on.
