Biography
Jo Bonnier Biography
Jo Bonnier, born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1930, was a legendary Formula One driver who participated in 104 races over a span of 10 years from 1956 to 1971. He was known for his calm and composed driving style, and was respected by his fellow drivers for his sportsmanship and gentlemanly behavior on and off the track.
Bonnier began his racing career in the mid-1950s, racing in various classes of motorsport such as sports cars and touring cars, and quickly made a name for himself as a talented and fearless driver. In 1956, he made his Formula One debut for the Maserati team at the Monaco Grand Prix, finishing in 10th place. He continued to race for Maserati for the next two seasons, achieving his first podium finish in 1958 at the French Grand Prix, where he finished third.
In 1959, Bonnier joined the BRM team and enjoyed a successful season, finishing second in the championship behind Jack Brabham. He also won his first and only Grand Prix that year, at the Dutch Grand Prix. He continued to race for BRM for the next two seasons, and in 1961 he joined the Porsche team, where he would remain for the next three years.
During his time at Porsche, Bonnier achieved several impressive results, including a win at the 1962 French Grand Prix, and a second-place finish in the 1962 World Championship. He also won the prestigious Targa Florio race in 1960 and 1961, driving a Porsche 718.
In 1964, Bonnier returned to the BRM team, but struggled to achieve the same level of success he had enjoyed earlier in his career. He retired from Formula One at the end of the 1971 season, having achieved 1 Grand Prix win, 15 podium finishes, and 2 pole positions.
After retiring from racing, Bonnier remained involved in motorsport as a team owner and manager, and also worked as a television commentator. Sadly, he was killed in a crash while racing in the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hours.
Jo Bonnier will always be remembered as one of the most talented and respected drivers in the history of Formula One, and his legacy lives on in the many drivers he inspired and influenced throughout his career.
