Johnny Herbert is a British racing legend who left an indelible mark on the Formula One circuit during his 13-year career. Born in Brentwood, Essex in 1964, Herbert was introduced to motorsport at a young age by his father, who worked as a mechanic. His passion for racing was ignited when he attended his first go-karting race at the age of 10.
After a successful karting career, Herbert made his debut in Formula Three in 1985, where he quickly made a name for himself as a promising young driver. He won the British Formula Three Championship in 1987 and moved up to Formula One with the Benetton team in 1989.
Herbert's early F1 career was plagued by injuries and setbacks, but he persevered and eventually achieved his first podium finish at the 1995 British Grand Prix. This breakthrough performance was followed by an even more impressive win at the 1995 Italian Grand Prix, where Herbert battled through the rain and overtook several rivals to claim his first F1 victory.
Despite suffering a near-fatal accident during the 1988 Brands Hatch Formula 3000 race, Herbert never lost his passion for racing. He returned to F1 in 1994 after a long recovery and went on to become one of the sport's most respected and beloved drivers.
Herbert raced for several top teams during his career, including Benetton, Sauber, Stewart, Jaguar, and Arrows. He competed in 165 Grand Prix races and scored three victories, seven pole positions, and 11 podium finishes. He retired from F1 at the end of the 2000 season, but continued to race in other series, including the Le Mans 24 Hours, where he won in 1991 and 1992.
Off the track, Herbert has been involved in various charitable endeavors, including the halow project, which supports young people with learning disabilities. He has also worked as a commentator and pundit for various motorsport events and has written two autobiographies.
In recognition of his outstanding career, Herbert was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2000 and was inducted into the Motor Sport Hall of Fame in 2019.
Johnny Herbert's passion, determination, and unwavering spirit have made him a beloved figure in the world of Formula One. His legacy lives on as a reminder of what can be achieved through hard work and perseverance, both on and off the track.
