Olivier Panis, born on September 2, 1966, in Oullins, France, is a former Formula One driver with an impressive career that spanned over a decade. He started racing karts at a young age and quickly showed promise, winning multiple regional and national championships.
Panis made his Formula One debut in 1994 with the Ligier team, and it wasn't long before he made his mark on the sport. In 1996, he scored his first and only Grand Prix victory at the Monaco Grand Prix. It was a remarkable achievement, especially considering the challenging street circuit of Monaco, and he became the first French driver to win the race since 1950.
Panis' career was not without its setbacks, however. In 1997, he suffered a horrific accident during practice for the Canadian Grand Prix, which resulted in a broken leg and forced him to sit out for several races. He later went on to drive for teams such as Prost, BAR, and Toyota, but he never quite recaptured the success he had in the early years of his career.
Despite this, Panis remained a popular figure in the paddock and was highly respected for his skill and determination. He retired from Formula One in 2004 after a career that included 157 Grand Prix starts, one win, and five podium finishes.
After retiring from racing, Panis remained involved in motorsport, working as a driver coach and team manager. He also competed in various other categories, including the FIA GT Championship and the Le Mans 24 Hours, where he finished on the podium in 1998 and 2006.
Panis' legacy in Formula One is a testament to his talent and perseverance. His victory at Monaco in 1996 remains one of the most memorable moments in the sport's history, and his determination to overcome the challenges he faced throughout his career is an inspiration to many.
