Ralf Schumacher during the 2006 French F1 GP
Ralf Schumacher, the younger brother of seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher, built a Formula 1 career that stands firmly on its own merits. Born on 30 June 1975 in Hürth, near Cologne, he started karting at the age of three on the track his parents ran in Kerpen. After winning the 1992 German Junior Kart Championship he moved into single-seaters, taking the Macau Grand Prix in Formula 3 and then winning the Japanese Formula Nippon title as a rookie in 1996, the first driver to manage that in a debut season.
He made his F1 debut with Jordan in 1997 and reached the podium in only his third start, the Argentine Grand Prix, becoming the youngest driver to stand on an F1 podium at the time. In 1998 he and Damon Hill delivered Jordan's maiden Grand Prix victory with a one-two at a rain-soaked Belgian Grand Prix.

In 1999 Ralf joined Williams, where he spent six seasons and reached the peak of his career. His first Grand Prix win came at the 2001 San Marino Grand Prix, the first of three victories that year, including an emotional home win at the German Grand Prix, which lifted him to fourth in the Drivers' Championship. Partnered with Juan Pablo Montoya he formed one of the era's strongest line-ups, and his best campaign came in 2003 with wins at the European and French Grands Prix and fifth place overall. In total he took 6 wins, 6 pole positions and 27 podiums before leaving the team at the end of 2004.
Ralf moved to Toyota for 2005, scoring the team several podiums and a pole position in Japan, and retired from Formula 1 after the 2007 season. He continued racing in the DTM with Mercedes from 2008 until stepping away from professional motorsport in 2012.
Today Ralf Schumacher remains a familiar face in the F1 paddock as a pundit and analyst for Sky Sport Germany. In July 2024 he publicly came out as gay, becoming one of the few openly LGBTQ+ figures associated with the sport. Across 180 starts for Jordan, Williams and Toyota he scored 329 points, a record that secures his place among Germany's most successful Grand Prix drivers.
