Hamilton and Rosberg pick different tyres for Australia
World champion Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg will run different tyres on the opening weekend of the new season in Australia next week.
F1’s new tyre rules means that the drivers now get three different compounds each weekend, and they get to choose how many of each they want in the hope of creating a variation in individual strategy.
Next week’s Australian Grand Prix will hopefully see drivers on a range of varying strategies, keeping the race interesting until the dying laps.
Hamilton has elected for just one set of medium tyres, while Rosberg has chosen two, meaning Hamilton, with six, will have an additional set of soft tyres at Albert Park.
Both drivers have chosen six sets of super-soft tyres.
Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, tipped to challenge the Mercedes pair in their improved Ferrari, have made the same decision as Rosberg.
The Williams pairing of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas have gone for an aggressive strategy of seven super-soft tyres, five softs and one medium.
However, Manor has chosen conservatively, with four sets of mediums, four softs and four super-softs.
