Charlie Whiting believes that F1 should consider a return to New York-based track Watkins Glen in the future.

The American track hosted the US Grand Prix between 1960-1981, and was popular with drivers and fans.

F1 race director Whiting visits the venue every three years as part of his FIA role, and believes it would add something different to the calendar.

"There are newer ones like the Circuit of the Americas, but it hasn't got the character this has," Whiting said.

"I think it would be an absolutely wonderful circuit for Formula 1 cars to race on, but we all know it's not quite as simple as that.

"As far as circuits in the US go, I think this is right up there."

The current US Grand Prix takes place in Austin, Texas.

However, a lack of state funding put the race at risk this season, although that has now been sorted.
