Former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemelo has hit back at claims Fernando Alonso struggled to integrate himself at the team.
The Spaniard drove for Ferrari between 2010-2014, but left after they failed to help him land a third world crown.
Current president Sergio Marchionne said that Alonso’s replacement Sebastian Vettel is already better suited to the team.
However, Di Montezemelo responded: "Alonso would have been more [a Ferrarista] if Ferrari, in 2010, had won a world championship that was easier to win than to lose.
"And if in the last race of the season you lose the world championship twice, these things need to be understood."
Vettel has become an instant hit at the Italian team by winning three teams in his debut campaign.
He also spoke in Italian at the team’s Christmas party last week.
The four-time champion is expected to compete for the world title next year, while Alonso continues to struggle with lowly McLaren.
