Fernando Alonso believes McLaren are the best-placed team to end Mercedes’ dominance next season, despite a woeful two-year spell.

Alonso opted to join McLaren from Ferrari in 2015 as he believed it gave him the best chance of winning the title.

But so far they have struggled and are only now beginning to regularly compete for points, while Ferrari and Red Bull mix it with Mercedes at the front.

"There are weekends where we're competitive and ones we struggle with the long straights that will be painful," he said.

"I think in general the team is doing OK.

"After Mercedes, someone has to lead the sport, and if you look at all the other teams and manufacturers, I don't think anyone is in a better position than McLaren-Honda for the future.

"There is still a long way to go, but I don't think anyone is doing better than us."
