Audi has said that it has no plans to enter Formula 1, despite a key opponent leaving the company.

Ferdinand Piech, who was always against the idea of the car giants competing in F1, has quit as chairman of the Volkswagen Group, Audi’s parent company.

The German brand competes in World Endurance Racing and DTM, while it has been repeatedly linked with F1 over the last 20 years.

However, a spokesman for them told BBC Sport: "The current situation is that Audi definitely has no intention to enter F1.”

Audi has been linked with purchasing Red Bull Racing in the past for £500m, although team boss Christian Horner has refuted these claims.

They hired former Ferrari team principle Stefano Domenicalli to conduct a study into how feasible it would be last year, although nothing has come of it since.

The VW group also boast a portfolio of other car giants, such as Lamborghini, Porsche and Bentley.
