At Silverstone, Valtteri Bottas took a "good step" towards a new deal to stay at Mercedes in 2020.

That is the claim of his team boss Toto Wolff, even though other drivers are being linked with the plum seat alongside Lewis Hamilton.

Wolff told German television RTL that both Hamilton, the actual race winner, and Saturday's pole sitter Bottas "deserved the victory" at the British GP.

Asked if Bottas has done enough to secure a new contract, Wolff answered: "He took a good step in that direction.

"That was his best performance so far since the beginning of the season," he added. "He does not give up and he has what it takes to go up against Lewis in qualifying on an equal footing."

Wolff is even happy with the way Hamilton and Bottas fought wheel-to-wheel on Sunday.

He told RTL pundit Nico Rosberg: "You trained us well from 2014 to 2016!

"Your rivalry was at a different level. Today was fair, exciting racing," Wolff told Rosberg, Hamilton's former teammate.

I know what happened to Valtteri Bottas in the British GP he was well and truly shafted by the Mercedes again. he as NO chance of winning a world championship while the Mercedes team work only for Hamilton. I do believe this is well out of order. the team says they have equal cars, not so. Valtteri is quite easily as good to get on the pole position,, but then things turn around when race day comes along, and yet again Valtteri is second. this should not happen. you have two drivers in every team so why is it team Mercedes only look out for Hamilton. it's so wrong. good luck Valtteri in all you do in the future.

he was only pole because he had fastest sector 2 only. Hamilton had fastest sector 1 & 2. Quali pace is only needed for one lap and race pace is fastest over 50+ laps. You forgot to mention the safety car that favored Hamilton and gave him essentially a free stop.

Oh, another one excelling at being wrong on two accounts by one shot.
Ferrari seems to have become an obsession with you people.

Simon I believe your first name is simple as all you say is Ferrari this and Ferrari that, there are other teams in f1,why is everything about Ferrari they've had some good driver's in the past and have one now in leclerc, give it a rest, stop crying and enjoy the sport.

    Projecting again, are we, Stephen?

But cheer up, you are not the first to be hoisted by your own petard.

If Ferrari and Vettel are obsessing you and your fellow in arms OK then, I suggest you seek help.
Trying to impute to others your obsession is hardly a way to get out of your predicament.

    Thank you playing.
